Measles-infected Oregon man exposed air travelers to disease

EUGENE, Ore. — A man infected with a case of the measles while visiting Japan potentially exposed dozens of air travelers to the disease along with more than 100 hospital patients, employees and visitors in Eugene, health officials said.

The Eugene man, who was not identified by officials, is in his early 20s. He flew back from Japan on May 22, changing planes in San Francisco.

The man would have been contagious during those flights, said Dr. Paul Cieslak, communicable disease manager in Oregon's Public Health Division.

now? Measles is a far cry from resistant TB--most people are vaccinated or have had it already, and very few people die of it even if they do get it. Is this the precursor to jerking people off the street for "observation" if they "look sick"? What the hell is this?

21. I know all that. Measles still isn't as harmful as resistant TB. Most

of us who grew up in the 50's don't remember anyone dying or being permanently disabled by measles, but we knew plenty of people who DIED of even the regular TB.

My main point was to shine a light on this huge hooraw in the nightly news -- for god's sake, this is a BUNCH OF SHIT orchestrated with a nefarious purpose -- to keep the sheep scared and off balance, and to let them know they can be pulled out of the line for any reason and by any "authority."

Neither TB man nor the measles carrier should EVER have been on the news for any reason. There is no reason, but to let us all know -- again -- that we are at our overlords' mercy.

Measles, TB, mumps, etc., were all reportable diseases when I was growing up in the 60's and 70's -- but they didn't pull people off planes and PUT IT IN THE NIGHTLY NEWS. It WASN'T news -- it was a matter for the public health authorities, the person, and the person's doctor.

25. Nobody. My point is that this story should NOT have dominated the

nightly news for days, distracting everyone from the real disease in this country -- the damn Bush Administration. It's fine with me if the CDC, etc., puts on its web site that a person with resistant TB was quarantined. It wouldn't have bothered me if there was a 30-second blurb on TV or a 5-inch column in the newspaper, either. That way, you and I can keep informed about those public health issues. Oh, and speaking of those public health issues, what about that huge CNN story that has been going on for days about how the Bush Admin wants to make it illegal for that one beef company to test ALL its beef for mad cow and advertise that fact to its prospective buyers? You know, that public health issue?

Oh, right......there are no week-long screaming stories/headlines about that. The only reason you and I know it is because it has been on DU, not because it has been debated at length on the nightly news. And thus my point -- the real issues we need to know about, public health issues and others, do not get the play that the dumbass lawyer with TB gets.

I'm not the one who wants to Nazify the US -- that would be Bush. I am simply trying to point out the difference between greater and lesser concerns, and how the news media is not serving the public interest when it distracts us with the lesser concerns just because those lesser concerns make a more compelling story that captures the idjits' (read: consumers) fancy.

In a world where people can spread disease across the globe in a few hours, the real threat to all of us is the US lack of universal health care. Too many sick people having to work and keep going without medical care puts ALL of us at risk.

Holding up a passenger who wanted to bring home a souvenir jar of jam is not making the world safe. Medical care would go a long way toward making the world safer.
