Moby 'believes' God destroys Republicans

Staunch Democrat Moby is enraged by religious extremists who suggest hurricanes and earthquakes are sent by God to destroy sinners, and has come up with a new theory about why the tragedies might occur.

Moby wrote on his personal website: "You know how the religious right will every now and then say that some natural disasters - hurricanes, earthquakes, etc - happen because God is angry at secular sinners?

"I mean, personally, I tend to think that things like hurricanes and tornadoes happen for non-anthropocentric reasons and are, actually, just examples of extreme and arbitrary weather.

"But if natural disasters are, as the evangelicals maintain, a sign of God's wrath, then what does it mean that 90 per cent of the damage caused by tornadoes and hurricanes in the US happen in right-wing, Republican states that are heavily populated by evangelicals?

"Again, I'm of the 'weather tends to happen because of climatological factors' school of thought.

2. I wouldn't play that game if I were him.
When it comes to NATURAL disasters, shit will happen, and it could just as easily be San Fran getting hit by an earthquake. I would look at unnatural distasters, like the failure in Iraq or after Katrina or global warming to see the hand of God at work, where "the hand of God" can also be translated into atheistese as "the realities that don't go away when people stop believing in them"; science, human nature, the pains of mismanagement, etc.

But I think Moby should get lost.

A pasty-faced freak who has a music video that depicts a swinger party as something innocuous - that's not an asset for liberalism and the Democratic Party. O, and did I mention that his music inspires hard drug use?

Just about as bad as an endorsement from a porn actress.

but I'm not in any position to judge someone else if they are. To those it works for, maybe it IS innocuous. Last time I checked, the dangly bits weren't shaped like a key that only fits one lock. And how exactly does his music "inspire" hard drug use?

Moby is an intellectual and a technologist,
in his approach to music. I like some of his stuff.
Lennon said God is a concept by which we measure our pain

Religion, I see is the problem and not god.

Faith

In a 2003 BBC interview, Moby speaks about his encounter with the gospels, "In about 1985 I read the teachings of Christ and was instantly struck by the idea that Christ was somehow divine. When I say I love Christ and love the teachings of Christ I mean that in the most simple and naïve way. I'm not saying I'm right."<9>

In a September 20, 2006, audio interview with Sojourners Magazine's John Potter, (a magazine considered to be a voice in the evangelical left), he says, "I read the New Testament, specifically the gospels and I was struck at their divinity, feeling that humans could not have figured this out on their own. We're just not bright enough."<10>

He also discusses his faith on his own weblog. On January 19, 2007, in his reaction to seeing Alexandra Pelosi's Friend of God, a film about evangelicalism in the United States, Moby writes, "The movie reminded me just how utterly disconnected the agenda of the evangelical Christian right is from the teachings of Christ."

I remember him discussing his faith in the early 90's in some Rolling Stone or SPIN interview. :)

PS: I don't understand the graphic. Are those all moving lines in that Hexigram? I can't tell if they are simply broken lines or moving lines

I'm not a moby fan, (I'm more moby grape than moby, thanks) and I haven't seen the "music video" in question-- but please- how does his music "inspire hard drug use"? Al & Tipper Gore are friends with Bob Weir and Mickey Hart from the Grateful Dead; unless I'm mistaken, I think a number of those guys played at the first Clinton Inaugural... perhaps they should "get lost", as well?

Really. And what about this "swinger party"? You mean Moby is the first rock and roll musician to ever suggest that adults might sometimes have consensual sex outside of the confines of marriage? Heavens, what next?

Perhaps you can give us a list of the approved musicians (and porn actresses) that should not, as you put it, "get lost"?

NSFW doesn't work as a subject line when the image appears in-line, you should only paste a link to the picture with appropriate warnings that also describe subject matter. People could be reading this not just at work but in a library, in a public room at home, whatever. I have no problem with boobies, quite a fan of them myself, but I know the last place I want them showing up is on my laptop in class. :)

I don't normally post nude pics, but it's difficult to have a debate over something no one has seen. (If that pic is indeed the "swinger party" the poster had referenced.)

I don't know all the ins & outs of Photobucket. I didn't know about posting a link to the pic. Should this situation arise again, I will take appropriate measures.

63. du is a specific problem
Most sites, you have to encode a link to a pic in special tags for it to show up. DU takes that step out. Maybe one of the gurus here knows of a tag you can wrap around it to prevent it from rendering. Do full-out anchor tags work here? If so then you put the picture in the link section and write your NSFW description after it.

I'll consider the negative-against-Moby knee-jerk reactions to this piss-poor excuse for "news" (ie: the OP -- NOT the OPoster so pls don't take it personally) just that: a knee-kerk (over)reaction to (because you don't like) Moby.

If you don't like Moby, fine. But maybe learn when someone is being facetious or satirical and when they're not before you launch "news" articles about them and/or subsequently lay into them with full guns a-blazin', based on those "news" articles, eh?

Else, your logic is as flawed as the dim-witted evangelicals he's satirizing - and it shows. Sheeesh.

20. Actually, it's that "you're alienating the values voter" crap that is the bullshit.
Edited on Sun Jun-03-07 04:24 PM by impeachdubya
The "middle America values voter" is nowhere NEAR as powerful as the conventional wisdom pooh-bahs want us to believe; remember Terri Schiavo? Remember how that bit a very surprised GOP on the ass?

FAR MORE POWERFUL than the "values voter" is the disaffected, educated, urban, suburban and exurban socially libertarian voter, the person who can't figure out which party is more interested in micro-managing his or her personal shit. Yes, we can woo the Heartland, but the way to do it isn't by ditching reproductive or gay rights, stumping for bullshit "abstinence only" programs that don't work, ladening speeches with phony Jesus platitudes or trying to build bigger 10 commandment monuments than the GOP does.

The way to get those folks is to stand up for a SPHC system, a liveable minimum wage, and policies like that which will directly improve their quality of life and the social justice in this country. Meanwhile, our party HAS TO adopt an across the board stance of respecting personal rights, keeping government out of citizens' bodies and bedrooms, AND standing up for THE SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE.

24. Its difficult
The voice of intolerance based on biblical views is louder in the states than the voice for tolerance based on biblical views. So when someone is being oppressed and being told that God condemns them for being themselves its hard not to associate those claims with the whole of the belief system. Particularly if the victim is not a part of the belief system.

If you're going to babble on without a clue as to what you're talking about, perhaps the libertarians should have YOU.

Moby says he tried smoking pot when he was 11 or 12 so he could hang out with the "cool kids," but that was pretty much the end of his experimentation. Says Moby: "I've never tried ecstasy, I've never tried cocaine, I've never tried heroin. I don't think there's anything ethically wrong with drug use, but the reason I stay away from it is that I value my brain too much. I don't want to trust my synapses to some stranger that I met in a nightclub. I hope to use my brain for the rest of my life."

One of the things that the media focused on was the drug aspect, as rave culture emerged with its own drug - Ecstasy. Moby has always been very outspoken about this side of the scene.

"If you look at drugs in a very general, broad term, to include cigarettes and alcohol, then I don't think there's any more drug use in the rave scene than any other. There's probably a lot more drug use in rock and roll because everybody's getting drunk all the time. But it's because alcohol is a more socially acceptable drug. It doesn't stand out. But I do think that drug use in the rave scene is a problem. Personally, I haven't done any drugs probably in about 8 or 9 years, but a lot of these kids do it recreationally, and they're doing really serious drugs.

"I know a lot of people who have had very positive experiences on Ecstasy and have really found it to be a therapeutic thing, which is keeping to the fact that before MDMA was illegal, it was used in therapy and psychological and psychiatric applications. But now the drugs people are doing are like Acid and Speed and all sorts of weird pills and synthetic stuff. And they're doing it so regularly that I think there's going to be some long lasting problems. I think it's also hurt the scene because now a lot of kids go out and their idea of a good time is just sitting on the floor, staring at their hands, as opposed to dancing or what ever."

Maybe you wouldn't need to "struggle on" if you tried THINKING. Enjoy your stay.

55. For all you "concerned" ones... since when has anybody in "middle America" even known who Moby is?
I only know he's some dude named after a whale, and I'm totally hip compared to the people he's talking about in his statements.

All I'm saying is, I don't think anybody's going to say, "I was going to vote Democratic until Moby opened his mouth". Anybody who would *actually* do that is far more likely to say "Moby who?"

57. man, was that quote ever taken out of context.
He was talking in hypotheticals--I sincerely doubt he meant that to be taken seriously as it is pretty ridiculous.
