Imagine the SOTU with subtitles
To pull this off, we'd need a copy of the speech at least a day in advance, and for Keith Olbermann to host the Reality-Based Rebuttal.

Basically, we'd do a line-by-line commentary in "real time" of Bush's speech.

For instance, when Bush starts talking about the surge, a little box comes up on the screen: "The pResident's 'surge,' which consists of deploying 21,000 additional troops to Iraq, is opposed by the Prime Minister of Iraq, the Pentagon, at least five Republican senators, at least fifteen Republican Congressmen, every elected Democrat in America, 99 percent of all funeral directors, 78 percent of the American people, and the entire rest of the world. In fact, the only people who support it are Bush's few remaining friends in Congress, the leading Shi'ite Militias in Iraq, Osama bin Laden and a couple defense contractors."

Or when Bush starts promoting his healthcare initiative, which basically consists of getting rid of employer-funded health insurance, the box will read, "that man in the front row cheering his ass off over this proposal is the CEO of Wal-Mart. He's excited about this scheme because if it passes, his company won't look like the ogres that they are. The guy sitting next to him is the CEO of the biggest HMO in the world. If he looks like he'd like to strangle Shrub, that's only because his entire business consists of selling health insurance group coverage to employers."

When Bush talks about the increase in homeownership rates, the little box will post the number of foreclosures in 2006 compared with foreclosures in 2005. Jobs? It will describe how Bush had the method for reporting unemployment changed.

1. I dont want subtitles, I want thought balloons
like in the comic strip when the character says one thing but is thinking the opposite.

I think thought balloons would be most enlightening.

7. Enlightening, or...?
NYCALIZ, if by "enlightening," you mean "blank," then I would agree with you there (re: thought balloons). This is Bush we're talking about... ;-) /snark

8. LOL, I think his arrogance, bullying and lying
would appear in his thought balloons, but I can see why you'd think they'd be blank.

11. You get my thumbs up for 'smirk balloons'
But I can also envision Rove face and words and neocon talking heads reassurances in his thoughts

12. It helps that I love Little Richard (Penniman) ... always have.
Edited on Mon Jan-22-07 04:01 PM by TahitiNut
He doesn't seem to have a malicious bone in his body ... or a lazy one. Back when my schoolmates were having the beginnings of Elvis fever, I was listening to the Kingston Trio, Fats Domino, and (sneakily) Little Richard. "Tutti Frutti," "Long Tall Sally," "Good Golly, Miss Molly," "Keep A Knockin'" (but chew can't come in), "Slippin' and Slidin'," "Rip It Up," "Lucille," and (especially) "The Girl Can't Help It" are inseperable from being a teen-ager for me. In Viet Nam, he was a staple of music that lifted our spirits. Even now, when I hear any of those songs from the 50s, I get into 'sing-along mode.'

Sheesh!! He's 74 years old and still GREAT.

10. Didn't Comedy Central ...
(back in the Clinton era) air any Presidential speeches, and make fun of them in real time.
I thought that was great. It actually got me interested in these speeches.

If there is ever a time that we should be making fun of the pResident, it is now.

Cheers
Drifter
