4. Yeah, great bashing a precocious child who tragically lost her
Edited on Fri Jun-08-07 09:41 AM by hlthe2b
father...Then a caller, after blowing considerable fauning smoke up Lionel's ass, proceeds to echo Bindi as the "devil Incarnate," but to add Brad and Angelina to the mix. At least Brand and Angelina have tried to accomplish some positives in their lives, Brad in NOLA, Angelina with Unicef...:eyes: Don't get me wrong, overly precocious children can be annoying, but to spend the hour talking about her?

Beyond the fact that this is such silly superficial babble, this is NOT what I want representing Progressive viewpoints on AAR.

5. I have changed my mind about Lionel.
Listened to him this morning discussing Bush and was hooked for about 20 mins. by what I thought was a fresh, penetrating analysis of Bush-as-addict.

I kind of enjoy the fact that he's not as ideological as most of the rest of AAR... although make no mistake he's well to my right on virtually every issue.

He's funny and entertaining. This is more important than some of his leftist critics know. Knowing how to entertain has kept Limbaugh a red-hot radio commodity for decades now, *in spite* of his demented politics.

AAR has to mix up the format ( and yes, lighten-it up)if it's going to make it in the commercial radio industry. There are only so many people that want to listen to angry diatribe every day no matter how apt the particular analysis may be.( eg. Randi)

I recently traveled by car from NY to Indiana and back and did not encounter a single AAR station or on-air personality on the car radio... despite the fact that I was specifically scanning to find one. In fact , in one stretch between Columbus and Indianapolis there were five separate stations carrying Limbaugh's show AT ONE TIME. And not one carrying a competing POV... although there were a couple of local news stations and , fleetingly, an NPR station out of Columbus.

My point: it's an ideological near- monopoly out there. If Lionel is able to succeed commercially where traditional liberal-left radio has failed , I say go for it.

6. Perhaps.... I have not (yet) turned my back on him...
We'll see. My impressions are extremely mixed, however.

8. He seems to do back handed sarcastic comments
Edited on Fri Jun-08-07 01:54 PM by Breeze54
that the first time I heard him I thought were hilarious!

Lionel strikes me as usually saying the opposite of what he is really thinking to invoke reactions.
I think he can be very funny. :P

One day, he was talking about God and beliefs. One caller called and said that his church had brainwashed him
into believing, and Lionel was astounded :P and asked the caller if he realized what he had just said??
That he had to be brainwashed into believing about the church teachings of God. It was a f**ing riot!!! :P

But the next show was rather bland... but so are a lot of AAR shows and other progressive shows.

Some days they're good, other days? Not so much.

that the first time I heard him I thought were hilarious!>>>

.... must have been the late eighties and I don't remember much but I do remember him calling Jesse Helms... then riding high, almost *respectable* to the rest of the media establishment... a "kuckle-dragging, goat-roping hick."

Lionel's flair for language is also something to consider. Not many people have it, at least not to that degree.

20. I think it started about the faith based BS groups...
and he was challenging followers and believers of * and his band of criminals.
They were calling in left and right and he kept challenging their 'beliefs'.
It was good stuff! :P

21. I have now. Thanks. It's *great*. I wish we heard more...
... from this Lionel on the radio and a bit less of the celebrity/pop culture thing he does.

But I think it is possible to combine the two... and maybe even essential.

23. From the podcasts, it seems he talks about the strictly political stuff earlier in the
show, and the pop culture stuff later.

9. AAR was a great experiment
It doesn't work for me anymore and hasn't for a long time.
I love Rachel, I love Randi, but they continually silence truly progressive voices for "middle ground".
I'm tired of conceding. I don't support them. I don't support the middle.
This country has been pulled so far right that the middle ground is nothing but conservatism.
I am progressive and I am liberal and I am damn proud of that.
Fuck the middle. Fuck Lionel. Fuck AAR.
There will be another progressive voice in the horizon...one that doesn't consist of republican ideals. I'm content to wait.
