Because Republicans don't want the focus to be on things like Gonzales and wiretapping.

Hoo, baby, the teleprompter reader sure got him off the air fast. And he laughed at her, and said, "Not exactly what you expected, was it?"

Go, Tommy Chong! You rock!

23. They are covering this like this for purely ratings reasons
The ratings for ANS were through the roof. They figure that by covering this story like this, their viewership will increase greatly, and they are right.

If these nets learned anything from ANS, they get a lot more viewers for covering this shit than they do for covering Buscho lies.

39. The Point: Chong raises awareness that distractions are being used
I truly believe THAT is the whole point of mentioning it! There will be some people out there who may, for the first time, begin to be more aware of how the administration & their propaganda enablers manipulate us by distraction, distortion, and obfuscation. There are tons of people out there who have been way too trusting of government and of media to imagine that these games are being played and that they're going right along with it.

Whether he's right or wrong in what he said today, maybe some people will begin to wake up. Whatever it takes!

In a related manner, I just wish our legislators would be more vocal about taking a stand even when they don't have the votes, just to educate the public about what our gov't SHOULD be doing, whether they're in the majority or not!!

26. Research? Those twits know how to do research?
Most of the good ones are probably all working for Olberman.

They don't want to waste their time with twits like the ones covering Hilton right now.

I think the worse one is the brunette that controls the panel.

Karen DeSoto thinks that because Hilton is not a normal person and therefore is justified to be treated better than regular offenders.

68. Look, we know ratings come second to politics. Remember what happened to Donahue
Had the best ratings on MSNBC. Yet they pulled him becasue he might have antiwar types on. Or Dan Rather. He told the truth, he had to be fired.

Ratings are important. And sure they are greedy money grabbing DEFENSE CONTRACTORS, in the case of NBC products.

And filling time with cheap pablum is as important an agenda to them as firing investigative reporters and factcheckers to boost the bottom line.

But the networks bow to the Republican party. They are co-dependents.

starting with the Manson "family" trials.

Her byline reads "special correspondent" because she covers only such stories. She is very much a legitimate and talented journalist.

71. well, pls forward my thanks to MS Deutsch for her blow-by-blow
report! This is MAJOR stuff and a very necessary diversion to keep Americans focused on anything but the real crises we face.

I think the legitimate and talented journalists are too busy investigating crimes and uncovering the truth to be concerned with a spoiled rich woman who draws attention to herself by doing the outrageous.

The media, as usual, is becoming part of the drama by forcing this garbage down our throats and giving it importance it doesn't deserve.

72. As much as it pains me to kick this thread
has it occurred to you that reporters cover the stories they're assigned because it's their job? Or that millions of people are interested in this?

I fully agree that it's much more an old load of crap than news, but if you need someone on whom to cast blame, put it on a 24-hour news model that sees a cheap and easy way to curry ratings from our celebrity-obsessed society. To blame a reporter for doing her job is ludicrous — especially since print media is passive; nothing forces you to read it.

Fresno Hilton is Paris' long-lost half-sister, who has some advice about jailhouse etiquette for Paris. Fresno showed up long before Paris's legal troubles, though. As you can imagine, she's a down-to-earth kinda gal, with no millions to back her up.

Enjoy!

59. For hard hitting media analysis America goes to TOMMY CHONG?
Why not, no one else seems to be doing it and the man does make a great deal of sense.

Of course there could be nothing political about it. After all what is a better frame for television commercials--dead and bleeding bodies strewn around the wreckage of the latest bombing in Iraq or a filthy rich spoiled bimbo getting dragged off to the pokey?

The one is a depressing situation for which there are no clear cut good options and for which many viewers (those who voted for Bush but now regret it) may even feel pain and guilt. The other is an opportunity for Americans to feel virtuous and self righteous as the long arm of the law nabs even Paris Hilton. Virtuous and self righteous Americans are far more likely to be in a spending mood than depressed and guilty Americans.

But right now I'm loving me some Tommy Chong.
