"Tort reform" zealot Robert Bork sues for $1,000,000 after slipping and falling
Leading Conservative Activist Seeks Punitive Damages

Judge Robert Bork, one of the fathers of the modern judicial conservative movement whose nomination to the Supreme Court was rejected by the Senate, is seeking $1,000,000 in compensatory damages, plus punitive damages, after he slipped and fell at the Yale Club of New York City. Judge Bork was scheduled to give a speech at the club, but he fell when mounting the dais, and injured his head and left leg. He alleges that the Yale Club is liable for the $1m plus punitive damages because they "wantonly, willfully, and recklessly" failed to provide staging which he could climb safely.

Judge Bork has been a leading advocate of restricting plaintiffs' ability to recover through tort law. In a 2002 article published in the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy--the official journal of the Federalist Society--Bork argued that frivolous claims and excessive punitive damage awards have caused the Constitution to evolve into a document which would allow Congress to enact tort reforms that would have been unconstitutional at the framing...

11. $18.42?
That's rather specific. I'd just as soon say it's worthless. $18.42 could buy you a nice dinner.

10. If it wasn't Robert Bork, conservatives would be sending round emails about this
"Did you hear about that law suit where some idiot fell trying to walk UP a flight of stairs and so he sued the college where it happened for one million dollars? I am not kidding! We need tort reform NOW."

14. I think he should be limited by his own preachings
He may sue for $25 plus cab fare. If he loses, he also pays the Yale
Club's legal fees (no limit there).

15. 82 year old friend fell at the hospital
There was something wrong with their floors, causing them to be sticky. Her foot stuck to it and she fell on the side of her face, with long term injuries. She couldn't find a lawyer to even talk to her because sueing hospitals is too difficult. I can name incident after incident where regular people can't even get a lawyer to talk to them. People release all that anger and indignation at Paris Hilton, but they never stand up for the little guy when the little guy needs it, so nothing ever changes anyway. And the rich get richer. We're so fucking stupid.

16. Sad but true
The lawyers she spoke to know that the hospital's insurance carrier will be able to starve her out until she accepts a settlement so low that it won't even cover their own costs. That doesn't work with a wealthy person like Bork, who can afford good representation and has no immediate need for the money.

22. Texas AG Greg Abbott did the same thing.
He's a republican. He was out jogging one day and a tree fell on him, and paralyzed him, and he sued the homeowner. He's been in a wheelchair for a couple of decades, at least, now.

when their "rights" are at stake- notwithstanding the fact that they work tirelessly to deny those same rights to others.

Wishing you and yours the worst, Mr. Bork.
