Where does it state that abortions are illegal in the constitution?
I'm dealing with a catholic fundie type, he claims he is catholic but 90% of what he posts comes right off fundie TV. He is one of the Reagan was the greatest leaders of all times, voted for daddy Bush twice and Shrub got his vote twice. Since shrub has done nothing to stop abortion he has declared himself a Libertarian and now is demanding that america follows the constitution right down to each word in it. He now says abortion is illegal under the constitution.

He is also supporting the privation of everything from welfare to prisons, leaving only the military as the only user of tax payers tax dollars. I think the guy believes that the Charles Dickinson's era was the golden age of progress. He thinks Oliver Twist had a lot of progressive ideals on how to handle the poor and children of the poor. Another one that thinks giving to charity gives him the right to say how people use the charity and who gets help, if they prove to him they deserve the help.

1. It doesn't, but I think these fundie types try to tie it into
"life," liberty and the pursuit of happiness...

4. You're confusing your documents
The "life, liberty and the prusuit of happiness" comes from the Declaration of Independence, not the Constitution.

Pedantically Yours, {grin}

2. Make him prove it
Make him cite the passage in the Constitution that supports his statement.

3. Well....
If you're one of those types that believes that life begins when you unhook her bra, then abortion violates the 5th and 14th amendments.
To hold this view however, one must accept that a gob of mitotic cells invisible to the human eye is the equivalent of a fully formed human and thus enjoying the protection of the constitution.

5. I believe it's a terminological argument
It confuses "a fetus is human" and "a fetus is a human". Another way of stating it is, by promoting "a fetus" to "a person" then abortion is murder (a proposition to which I do not ascribe).

Of course he attributes that to my being a damn liberal thats destroying american values.

Edited due to using contribute instead of attributes, just one of those mornings.

7. Well if it is in the Constitution, then our founding fathers violated it.
There were no anti-abortion laws in the US until 1820.

http://womenshistory.about.com/od/abortionuslegal/a/abortion.htm

So the very same people who wrote and signed the Constitution willfully violated it for at least 31 years. In 1820, the law allowed for abortions up until the fourth month. So even in 1820 they continued to ignore what they wrote?

I guess our founding fathers didn't get a chance to read (and therefore follow) the Constitution they signed. :sarcasm:

10. Tell him you will take him seriously, when he stops availing
himself of things paid for by tax dollars. Don't call the police or fire station. Can't drive on the roads or walk on the sidewalks. Turn off the power and water - unless you live in an area with unregulated private utilities. Pull kids (if he has any) out of public school. Avoid all public parks and forests. Could go on and on.

11. I believe anti-abortions laws
came about in various states after the Constitution was written. I've heard their claims as well and generally dismiss them as uninformed.

13. Abortion and Constitution
Obviously, abortion is never mentioned in the Constitution. Since it's not a constitutional right, I believe it is an appropriate matter for the States to decide.

14. While I'm Catholic and pro life I still think it is a matter between
a women and her doctor. I don't think the states or anyone else has that right. We need to legislate some real pro life legislation, and abortion has nothing to do with it. How about decent wages, health care, education. Those are just for starters.

16. Love the typo....
>>"He is also supporting the privation of everything......"<<

That's pretty much the goal of these people that hate all things government does. They want to 'privatize' everything until it is not funded at all, thus allowing everything the gov't does to stop because it has suffered from intentional 'privation.'

17. There's no talking sense to fundies
Chances are that this guy wouldn't understand or accept history or constitutional law and more than he understands Catholicism.
