Have we become "nattering nabobs of negativity"?
Edited on Tue Jun-12-07 09:05 AM by Perky
It occurs to me that GD has on occasion become a cesspool of endless rants. It is not that we do not have every right to be pissed off and speak our minds. And I certainly am in no way suggesting that we give an inch to this bloody regime.

But.....

Life is too short....too precious.......to be continually angry and continually despair. We will survive this national nightmare and as corrosive as these guys have been to America and its standing in the world, I take great solace in the fact that these guys will be gone in about a year and a half. I take great comfort in rulings like the one out of Richmond yesterday.

I take great joy in seeing we have such a fine field of candidates to replace this administration.

At the end of the day I KNOW we will survive as a a nation. We may never be the nation any of us want us to be, but that is factored in to the cost of this grand experiment.

The point is this it can be mentally unhealthily to live our lives full of anger and despair. Get off the net for awhile. It is summer and things are heating up as our respective candidates vie for our allegiance and our cash. Get out among the people. Volunteer. Help build a house for Habitat. Get involved in voter registration efforts. Be progressive by getting out from behind your keyboard.

Folks it will get better...Promise. But if we think it happens simply by ranting about Bushco in our insulated online community we are deceiving ourselves.

Cheers.

2. No, We're correcting erroneous facts. We're not accepting
a despot as our permanent ruler. We may be one of the few bastions of relative truth and reality. And that by itself can be negative and cynical, but you can't sugarcoat truth. It is what it is.

3. What else can you do when you see the future, and it looks like 10 years of Iraqi occupation?
Polls show Hillary way ahead of other dems. Of course, she may ultimately lose against whoever the Republican is, but that might be even worse.

You can use the spiro agnew phrase to describe me, but it is reality.

5. Yes, this is something that must be guarded against.
The approach I like is Thom Hartmann's - he tells it like it is, but without the anger and despair.

7. But
don't you run the severe risk of having the Spiro Agnew branch of the democratic party think you are dangerously negative for pointing that out?

10. Indeed. So we had better just sit down and shut up.
After all we cannot risk doing anything, failure might result. Or so it seems. We are the party that never takes risks. Dare to struggle dare to win? I think not.

11. Many if not most
of our nation's current problems have come about since VP Agnew was the target of angry democrats. I'm not saying that those children who were involved in the civil rights and anti-war games in the 1960s and '70s weren't sincere, but things just got out of hand. We need to listen to the more mature adult voices, so that people like Phil Kent don't accuse us of being angry.

8. When you are drowning it's hard to smile and sing cheery tunes
Many of us feel as if we are struggling to survive the largest political crisis ever. When we see with what callous disregard the laws of the Constitution have been countermanded, it makes us shudder.

Illegal wiretapping alone should have brought a swift and sure halt to this executive branch. Add to that the lies that took us to war illegally, the suspension of habeas corpus and the systematic replacement of AGs purely for political reasons.

We no longer have a representative government: We have a wholly-owned corporate entity that rules through fear and PR.

9. Well, that's how Agnew termed the press...he was mad because they only, in his mind, reported the
BAD news...which was the only news coming out of the Nixon administration.

We can blame William Safire for the "nattering nabobs" term as he wrote it for Agnew.

Quite honestly, I would say that the REAL problem nowadays is that we don't have enough of those nattering nabobs in the US press corps--they're all a bunch of toadies, afraid to piss off their corporate masters....those NBC reporters, why, they've gotta please their General Electric (GE--We Bring Good Wars to Life) masters as well as put out a punchy news product. Fox, CNN, ABC, even CBS, you follow the money and they're all making a bundle off of the US government. They'll go "so far" and no further, because they like their paychecks. It's rank cowardice, really. There's no independence anymore.

The gloom and doom types here who play out the Chicken Little scenario almost daily are another story, but if you walk the "nattering nabob" cat back to its original iteration, in that it referred to the PRESS, we need MORE of those, not fewer.

12. If reality checks, truth-speaking, and disagreeable facts qualify...
...then I have been a proudly-nattering nabob ever since they carted Spiro away, thanks.

obnoxiously,
