'Senator will return to work'

Washington - A US senator whose brain haemorrhage threatened the Democrats' new majority control a month after they won it, has improved and should return to his duties in the Senate.

Dr Michael Yochelson said in a statement that Senator Tim Johnson showed improvement last week in walking unaided and in his speech, which has become more fluid.

Yochelson said: "I'm very well aware that he's interested in continuing his work as a senator and I'm confident that he will be able to resume his duties."
