Judge Orders Man Not to Have Girlfriend
PETERBOROUGH, Ontario (AP) - A judge has ruled that a 24-year-old Canadian man is not allowed to have a girlfriend for the next three years.

The ruling came after Steven Cranley pleaded guilty on Tuesday to several charges stemming from an assault on a former girlfriend.

Cranley, who has been diagnosed with a dependent personality disorder, attacked his girlfriend in an argument after their breakup.

He tried to prevent her from phoning the police by cutting her phone cord and punched and kicked her. He finally stabbed himself with a butcher knife when police did arrive, puncturing his aorta.

I agree the man has problems and needs help, but how do you enforce something like this?

1. You don't.
How would you even define that?

3. Good question
Does it have to involve sex? Is he barred from socializing/working with females that he might become emotionally attached to?

Where do you draw the line?

2. Good luck enforcing that.
Cranley obviously has big problems. Sadly, though, it seems that abusers of both genders rarely have trouble finding the next punching bag.

4. The only way to enforce it is to keep him in custody in a place with no women
Jail or a state mental institution. Either way works just fine.

7. That was what I expected to see when I read further in the article
Instead the Judge let him out deciding that his 146 days in pre-trail custody was enough time in jail.

Then he gives him a sentence that appears to be unenforceable.

8. I would appear so
I wonder if he's prone to such bizarre rulings or of this was his first?

12. Some time sweeping floors and observing things in the ER might be good for the judge
Too many officials do not take such abusers seriously enough. They need to see how many people (lots of female people) get hospitalized due to violent abusers.

Ignoring mental health care (for the abusers and the chronically abused) costs a lot more than providing mental health care.

13. I have to agree
Some real life interaction would be good for many officials. Too often they're removed from the ramifications of their judgments. It would be a better world if it were a mandatory type of continuing education required to retain their positions.

11. One who sees him as "damaged goods"
That she can help.

One that does not know to define boundaries for herself.

One that cannot see past the smokescreen he will create in the beginning.

One with tenuous ties to friends and family to begin with.

One with a history of abuse.

Sadly, I can go on if you want.
