Glenn Greenwald's Comments:Chris Matthews on Fred Thompson's sexiness and smells

I've written a fair amount recently about the media's obsession with the faux-masculinity of GOP candidates in general, and the tough-guy military persona of Fred Thompson in particular, and don't have all that much to add about that specific topic at the moment. Still, this dialogue last night about Fred Thompson from Chris Matthews -- who is really just the slightly less restrained id version of most media stars -- is simply too extraordinary not to note:

Does have sex appeal? I'm looking at this guy and I'm trying to find out the new order of things, and what works for women and what doesn't. Does this guy have some sort of thing going for him that I should notice? . . .

Gene, do you think there's a sex appeal for this guy, this sort of mature, older man, you know? He looks sort of seasoned and in charge of himself. What is this appeal? Because I keep star quality. You were throwing the word out, shining star, Ana Marie, before I checked you on it. . . .

Can you smell the English leather on this guy, the Aqua Velva, the sort of mature man's shaving cream, or whatever, you know, after he shaved? Do you smell that sort of -- a little bit of cigar smoke? You know, whatever.

What can even be said about that? And nobody really seems to find this odd or disturbing or objectionable at all -- that night after night, one of the featured "journalists" of a major news network goes on television and, with some of our most prestigious journalists assembled with him, speaks admiringly about the smells and arousing masculinity and the "daddy" qualities of various political officials, and that this metric is, more or less, the full extent of his political analysis.

1. "Probes"? Do we really want to say "probes"?
As in "Tweety probes Thompson's ..."

2. One gets the impression...
That the reverse might be one of Tweety's secret fantasies.

What the hell is it with all of these supposedly straight and buttoned-down writers and pundits and their thinly-veiled mancrushes? Jeebus, it's getting creepy.

3. Same guy who spouted (!) with, "women loves this war!!!!"
Yo Mr. Matthews, if you gotta fantasize about being a woman, could you please quit fantasizing about being such an incredibly dumb one?

4. Oh my God, that's it. I've been trying to get a handle on the whole
Chris Matthews vibe...

Yeah, he strikes me as a closet cross-dresser type.

12. If you are implying he's gay, he is not a "closet cross-dresser type"
Those transvestites are overwhelmingly heterosexual and would not be turned on by Thompson's musk. You're welcome.

17. I think I know the difference. I don't think he's gay.
I think he's a closet cross-dresser type.

5. On the right guy
Old Spice is sexy. Fred Thompson is not that guy. It has nothing to do with what he looks like. It's the fact he's not thoughtful, he's not smart, and he's certainly not interesting.

IMHO, YMMV,
Julie

7. Matthews who plays a "respected" news journalists is fawning over a GOPer
A highly paid pundit slobbering over how a GOP candidate smells and looks and feels and appears.

And the rest of the corporate media sees nothing wrong with this.

8. That's Our Tweety...
Kudos to Glenn for stating, once again, the obvious...something us DU'ers have been pointing to since the "codpiece" moment and Tweety's orgasmic spew the night asshat played Tom Cruise in San Diego harbor. And it's been seen in action toward all types of Repugnicans...from his fawning over DeLay ("I owe ya") to Ghouliani to Mittens and thensome. Add to this his total hatred of all things Clinton...especially Hillary and you have one real messed up dude.

I think it's "Catholic guilt" working here...he craves for the strong male figure...the patriarch and feels threatened by powerful women.

Edited on Fri Jun-15-07 09:07 AM by Norquist Nemesis
The sex appeal topic had strayed a bit to a more general discussion about Thompson, so Matthews puts it back on track by going to AnnaMarie Cox (?), "Do you think he's sexy, AnnaMarie?"

15. I'm trying to channel my nurse's-aide days, when I used to help
old farts like Fred wash their armpits, change their Depends and wipe their butts (because old people never seem to do a good job of that)--nope, no tingly feeling for me. Tweety must have spent too much time as a kid "wrestling" with Grampa or old Uncle Louie.

14. Yesterday he was claiming his diabetes needle sticks were enjoyable like men shaving
Surely, his producers must make him aware of what we and nationally published writers are saying about his man-crushes. His performance in "moderating" the debates shows he is shameless.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x1113555

"Of his regular, self-administered blood tests, he says, “I (now) enjoy it the way men like to shave in the morning.”

(My compassion for his illness is compartmentalized over by itself.) Perhaps that quote is a bit of explanation of his continual man-crushes on RAYGUN, Shrub, McCAIN, GIULIANI, Fred THOMPSON---that Tweety is always trying to be one of the dudes and he is attracted to stereotypes of what these REAL MEN are like.

When I was a kid and wanted to shave, my daddy said, "Some day you're going to hate doing it." He was correct. And I don't hear other dudes singing the praises of shaving. And I have no enjoyment of needle sticks.
