WASHINGTON -- "He and I are very, very close," Sen. Jim Webb said about his 25-year-old son, Marine Lance Cpl. Jimmy Webb.
Literally.
Jimmy, trim, sandy-haired and wearing civilian clothes, popped up to meet a visitor yesterday from a desk in an outer office adjoining his father's on Capitol Hill.
This is the same young man whose welfare in Iraq combat Webb declined to discuss with President Bush in a cool White House exchange last November.
Webb, D-Va., wore his son's combat boots on the campaign trail in Virginia last year. He declined then to talk about Jimmy, who was sent to Iraq. Webb has said he didn't want to politicize his son's service.
Now Jimmy, after a nine-month deployment, is home on leave for several weeks. He still has at least another year and a half in the Marine Corps and goes back to Camp Lejeune, N.C., on June 25.
