Schlozman: The Only Good American Lawyers Are White, Male Christians

I caught this listening to a cable show (can’t remember which one) but it is the only time I heard it referred to. Is this guy for real? He thought he could get away with this and no one would pay attention? Well maybe he’s right for this should be a big story and yet it’s hardly out there. Schlozman who, with a straight face and munchkin voice sat there and tried to convince senators that he would never pervert the course of justice in this country, is the face of evil. Even the Monica Goodlings of this world should be afraid.


Schlozman sought to hire ‘good Americans.’

“A December 2005 complaint against controversial senior Justice Dept. official Bradley Schlozman alleged that Schlozman was “systematically attempting to purge all Civil Rights appellate attorneys hired under Democratic administrations.”

appeared to be “targeting minority women lawyers” in the Civil Rights Division and was replacing them with “white, invariably Christian men.” The lawyer also alleged that “Schlozman told one recently hired attorney that it was his intention to drive these attorneys out of the Appellate Section so that he could replace them with ‘good Americans.’”

“Via TPM Muckraker comes a nice little taste of what the USA firings have revealed. The quote is from an anonymous complaint filed about Bradley Schlozman, a former US attorney in Missouri who was also an appointee in the Civil Rights division of the Justice Department:

"Bradley J. Schlozman is systematically attempting to purge all Civil Rights appellate attorneys hired under Democratic administrations," the lawyer wrote, saying that he appeared to be "targeting minority women lawyers" in the section and was replacing them with "white, invariably Christian men." The lawyer also alleged that "Schlozman told one recently hired attorney that it was his intention to drive these attorneys out of the Appellate Section so that he could replace them with 'good Americans.'"

The anonymous complaint named three female, minority lawyers whom Schlozman had transferred out of the appellate section (of African-American, Jewish, and Chinese ethnicity, respectively) for no apparent reason. And in a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee earlier this week in response to questions from senators, the Justice Department confirmed that all three had been transferred out by Schlozman -- and then transferred back in after Schlozman had left the Division.:

Doesn't say anything about white Christian women, the main target being minority women, though it does specify men.

A native of Overland Park, Kansas, Mr. Schlozman served a two-year federal judicial clerkship with Chief U.S. District Judge G. Thomas VanBebber of the District of Kansas. He then spent a year clerking for U.S. Circuit Judge Mary Beck Briscoe of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. In 1999, Mr. Schlozman moved to Washington, where he joined the Supreme Court and Appellate Litigation Practice at Howrey, Simon, Arnold & White, LLP, before moving on to the Department of Justice in November 2001.
