Scientists Examine Cause of Bee Die-Off
http://www.enn.com/today.html?id=12961&ref=rss

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Scientists investigating a mysterious ailment that killed many of the nation's honeybees are concentrating on pesticides and a new pathogen as possible culprits, and some beekeepers are already trying to keep their colonies away from pesticide-exposed fields.

After months of study, researchers are finding it difficult to tie the die-off to any single factor, said Maryann Frazier, a senior extension associate in Penn State University's entomology department.

"Two things right now ... that are really keeping us focused are the pathogen and the role of pesticides," Frazier said.

Scientists from Penn State and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are leading the research into colony-collapse disorder, including study of the yet-to-be identified pathogen, a microorganism capable of causing disease.

Heres the interesting part of this article

Some of the neonicotinic pesticides are available in stores to homeowners, though some bottles may not have the same warning labels as those available commercially, researchers and beekeepers said. Bayer officials said they were not aware of the issue but were looking into it.

Bingo cause I have looked and some pesticides for home use does not have those warnings...WHY FREAKIN NOT???

being used on crops that are toxic to bees and large scale industrial hives that use chemicals on their bees which end up causing more virulent diseases etc.

4. ..... if by that you mean that they have decided that they are not the cause,
and are now looking at the things which are likely to be the cause.

5. beleive me I noticed that and suspect it too
the obvious thing is the smoke screen and how scientists are so slow to find out and beekeepers are taking their own action

8. My son watched a bee special and said according to the report...its MITES
There seems to be a mite of some sort that devastates hives...and its only a matter of time before the whole continent goes beeless. Then the World......

If true....the First Major Human Die off will follow soon thereafter....

The Population keeps rising

The Food production is steady

The deficit in food is growing.

Enter bees disappearing, rising ocean Levels, diminishing fisheries, diminishing fuel for tractors/etc, and we have a Problem..

More important is our President who is not interested in Science...rejects the whole notion of Global Warming, etc and thus wastes precious time to address the Problem...Because the Pubs care not for the Future, having bet lock stock and Barrel on the Rapture, Bush and the GOP have their heads up their asses....

Even beyond worse, the Crony Factor under Bush prevent Solutions...his appointees have been a major F/U

Under the GOP...We have been F/k'd now they made sure We be fuck'd again in the Future....

12. the mites may be more of an effect than a cause...
i.e.- a hive decimated by ccd is more susceptible to the mites.

it's most likely a combination of pesticides, and gm-crops with imbedded pesticides of their own.

9. What I remember from an earlier post...
There was a pesticide that Bayer was selling in France, that killed of 70% or so of the bees there in the same way they disappeared here. They managed to ban it over there, it never happened here of course.

Does anyone remember the details on that?

15. If I'm not mistaken, it is a derivative of nicotinic acid, but there...
a lot of pesticides and other thnigs that use nictotine derivatives.

Nicotine is a highly addictive poison, as any smoker will tell you.

combination of problems, not a single issue.

Once some fool company says they are clea of any implications, it could well be that GE foods and a combination of another or more situations lev the bees open to all kinds of problems.

W/O the bees, a lot of people are going to starve, we are seriously dependent upon them. No wheel spinning on this issue, the ramifications are far too great...x(
