Fred Thompson helped raise over $5 million for the "save Scooter" defense fund

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0607/4517_Page2.html

<snip>

The Libby Legal Defense Trust, backed by former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson and other prominent Republicans, has raised more than $5 million to help Libby defray his legal costs, The Politico has learned, with contributions of as little as $5 coming from grass-roots conservatives.

Mary Matalin, the vice president’s former counselor, wrote direct-mail letters raising more than $1 million, and she has promoted a Libby fundraising website during her frequent radio and TV appearances.

1. Perjury - a conservative republican Value
Members of the party of responsibility and integrity do not want to be held responsible for anything and have absolutely no integrity. And to think they used "no underlying crime" to fire up the base, to justify a republican party leader's lying to a federal prosecutor.

Oh, if there were no underlying crime why did scooter HAVE to lie?

3. Shows he has no concerns about Law and Order. Not much to recommend him for Pres.
Constitution? Lawful behavior from top officials? Evidently, he has no concern for either.

4. What's wrong with these people??
It seems to me the defenders of Libby are being very stupid. They can't even produce a decent fall-guy scenario, ie. blame their system wide corruption on one lower-level employee, cut him loose and therefore look like they care about cleaning up corruption. By defending Libby they look like they're protecting one of their own, to hell with justice.

This confirms my belief that most of Washington no longer listens to the general populace at all, but only to the Pundits and paid political consultants. Anna Quinlan called it "the Washington self-referential circle of conventional wisdom". I call it "the Washington Circle Jerk". Eventually, ignoring the wishes of the American people will bite all Washington legislators in the ass.

I guess that's the good news.

5. Mary Matalin and the non-gay Cheney daughter (can't remember her name)
are on his Thompson's team as well--a true gift for Democrats, since he seems intent on smearing himself with the Bush/Cheney slime, while other R candidates are distancing themselves. The ads for the general election will write themselves with this guy.
