This Tuesday’s Day of Action to Restore Law and Justice in Washington, D.C. will be a pivotal moment in the fight to restore the civil liberties and constitutional values undermined over the past six years.
The tide is turning. Congress is hearing our demands to hold the Bush administration accountable for running roughshod over the rule of law, and some within the White House are starting to see the writing on the wall.
Just yesterday, we learned that powerful forces in the administration are pushing for the closing of the prison at Guantanamo. But we can’t wait to see if the White House does the right thing. That’s why the ACLU is working closely with Members of Congress to pass legislation to close Guantanamo and we’ll be taking that message to Capitol Hill on Tuesday.
And yesterday’s reports about upcoming Congressional subpoenas on the Bush illegal NSA spy program only confirm Congress may finally be mobilizing to demand that the White House and its allies do the right thing.
We’re mobilizing too. With your help, the ACLU and other groups have collected more than 140,000 petition signatures. We’re hand-delivering our petitions to Congress on Tuesday to send a loud, clear message: We the people demand that lawmakers hold this administration accountable for its actions and restore our constitutional rights. If you haven’t signed the petition, you can do so now.
Closing Guantanamo. Restoring Habeas Corpus. Ending torture and extraordinary rendition. Shutting down the NSA’s illegal spying program. These actions used to be on the ACLU’s “wish list” but today thanks to your passion and support all of these items are now real possibilities. This summer we will work together to make them happen.
Thousands of citizens are traveling from every state and by bus from as far away as Florida and Minnesota to participate in this historic event. We’ll hold a rally on Capitol Hill, and then activists will storm Congress, meet with every Senate member and several hundred representatives to demand the restoration of law, justice and all our constitutional rights.
More than 50 organizations are participating in the Day of Action, representing more than 4 million Americans—a force that Congress cannot ignore. If you aren’t able to join us in person, you can watch the rally live at www.juneaction.org and get live updates on our blog. Also, stay tuned for a special appearance by someone many have come to know and love.
