And When I Am Proved Wrong In My Predictions ...
I am willing to serve my punishment by becoming a national talking head pundit. I will clearly qualify.

Prediction -

The people of USA find themselves in a Constitutional crises of the first order. Be there any group in USA willing to stage a coup against the Constitution, it is Cheney and Co.

Many of Cheney's actions show just how far the administration is willing to go outside of the rule of law. Given how much is at stake, it is a great mistake to think Cheney et al are not willing to commit the final solution within the world of power.

Cheney and shrub have the forces and have shown themselves willing to use them to protect themselves. They have to see how vulnerable they are once they leave office and give up power. These people will not go quietly into the night to leave themselves and their families open to arrest.

The threat to democracy is real. This junta will not leave peacefully. Once the impeachment process is begun by Congress, a coups d'etat will follow. The coups d'etat will lead to civil war.

______

Come January 2009, I hope to be serving my punishment in the world of punditry. Look for me on national TV. Or in Gitmo.

Well it's by the hush, me boys, and sure that's to hold your noise
And listen to poor Paddy's sad narration
I was by hunger stressed, and in poverty distressed
So I took a thought I'd leave the Irish nation

Well I sold me ass and cow, my little pigs and sow
My little plot of land I soon did part with
And me sweetheart Bid McGee, I'm afraid I'll never see
For I left her there that morning broken-hearted

Here's you boys, now take my advice
To America I'll have ye's not be going
There is nothing here but war, where the murderin' cannons roar
And I wish I was at home in dear old Dublin

Well myself and a hundred more, to America sailed o'er
Our fortunes to be making we were thinkin'
When we got to Yankee land, they put guns into our hands
"Paddy, you must go and fight for Lincoln"

Here's you boys, now take my advice
To America I'll have ye's not be going
There is nothing here but war, where the murderin' cannons roar
And I wish I was at home in dear old Dublin

General Meagher to us he said, if you get shot or lose your head
Every murdered soul of youse will get a pension
Well in the war lost me leg, they gave me a wooden peg
And by soul it is the truth to you I mention

Here's you boys, now take my advice
To America I'll have ye's not be going
There is nothing here but war, where the murderin' cannons roar
And I wish I was at home in dear old Dublin

Well I think myself in luck, if I get fed on Indianbuck
And old Ireland is the country I delight in
To the devil, I would say, it's curse Americay
For the truth I've had enough of your hard fightin

Here's you boys, now take my advice
To America I'll have ye's not be going
There is nothing here but war, where the murderin' cannons roar
And I wish I was at home in dear old Dublin
I wish I was at home
I wish I was at home
I wish I was at home
I wish I was at home in dear old Dublin

2. The coup has already happened
The genius (if that is the word for it) of Cheney is that he just did what he wanted to do, and gambled that no one would care or have the guts to challenge him. So far he has been proven right.

Why go for the full-blow coup and gain attention when one can do the exact same thing in secrecy. Direct hundreds of billions of dollars to your buddies and yourself, spy on others, intimidate others with that info....

About the only thing we haven't seen, yet, are mass roundups of "dissidents". He has gotten his ya-ya's out of torturing "non-citizens", and even a few select brown citizens, but I suspect that doing the same to a bunch of white, male US citizens is something that he hasn't wanted to get into, yet.

And- Oh so sorry, all the pundit jobs are taken. You have to work your way up the Punditry ladder first, either by right of birth, long years toiling away at writing propaganda, $$$ or having worked for Bushco. No other pathways are allowed.

6. There may come a time when the military must decide...
what their "mission" is: to protect the country or protect the traitorous "commander in chief"

I have a feeling the military's not in full agreement about these conflicting directives, and this is what I think the OP means by coup - as in military coup, and the possible outcome of civil war by a split within our military. Alot of things have to happen, and have to already be in place (in secret) for this to play out like that. I generally see the folks defending the country not ready for a fascist coup. It may happen quickly with little resistance, or it may never happen, or it may get ugly. We don't know where and how the lines will be drawn from within, but I hope there's some plan to address this possibility.

“Nemesis: The Last Days of the American Republic.”

She's present in our country right now, just waiting to make her - to carry out her divine mission

http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=07/02/27/1454229

CHALMERS JOHNSON: Nemesis was the ancient Greek goddess of revenge, the punisher of hubris and arrogance in human beings. You may recall she is the one that led Narcissus to the pond and showed him his reflection, and he dove in and drowned. I chose the title, because it seems to me that she's present in our country right now, just waiting to make her -- to carry out her divine mission.

By the subtitle, I really do mean it. This is not just hype to sell books -- “The Last Days of the American Republic.” I’m here concerned with a very real, concrete problem in political analysis, namely that the political system of the United States today, history tells us, is one of the most unstable combinations there is -- that is, domestic democracy and foreign empire -- that the choices are stark. A nation can be one or the other, a democracy or an imperialist, but it can't be both. If it sticks to imperialism, it will, like the old Roman Republic, on which so much of our system was modeled, like the old Roman Republic, it will lose its democracy to a domestic dictatorship.

I’ve spent some time in the book talking about an alternative, namely that of the British Empire after World War II, in which it made the decision, not perfectly executed by any manner of means, but nonetheless made the decision to give up its empire in order to keep its democracy. It became apparent to the British quite late in the game that they could keep the jewel in their crown, India, only at the expense of administrative massacres, of which they had carried them out often in India. In the wake of the war against Nazism, which had just ended, it became, I think, obvious to the British that in order to retain their empire, they would have to become a tyranny, and they, therefore, I believe, properly chose, admirably chose to give up their empire.

As I say, they didn't do it perfectly. There were tremendous atavistic fallbacks in the 1950s in the Anglo, French, Israeli attack on Egypt; in the repression of the Kikuyu -- savage repression, really -- in Kenya; and then, of course, the most obvious and weird atavism of them all, Tony Blair and his enthusiasm for renewed British imperialism in Iraq. But nonetheless, it seems to me that the history of Britain is clear that it gave up its empire in order to remain a democracy. I believe this is something we should be discussing very hard in the United States.

4. sorry,
not going to argue with you

these people will NOT go quietly into the night.

There is NO WAY they are going to hold an actual election, lose, and say, "ok, your turn, we're outta here"

just NO WAY!

the groundwork has already been laid. They have their presidential order on martial law in case of emergency, and the president gets to say what constitutes an emergency. All he has to do is say "oops, tornado hit Lonelyville, Iowa, killed two pigs and four chickens - national emergency - now I'm king - congress can go home, SCOTUS can go fishing, and those elections? HA! not in MY lifetime!"

I do, however, anticipate that in some fashion it will be orchestrated so that Cheney gets overt control, rather than continuing using the sock puppet as a front man. I don't think shrub has been taking direction sufficiently to darth's liking of late.

I just hope that there is a group of intelligent patriots who understand this, and are ready to respond.

The declaration of emergency needs to be countered within a couple of hours by a "declaration of no fucking way." And it will require extra-constitutional moves.

My vision is that the states do it. Any countermove by the Congress or the military would be seen as political power struggle.

It needs to clearly go back to the foundation of our government - "These United States" governed "at the consent of the governed"

157 years ago several states seceded due to a dispute over their sovriegnty. At that time, the underlying reason for the dispute was slavery, it was a bad reason, an immoral reason and their move was eventually quashed. And it was only one region, albeit a large one, of the country that seceded.

But now, it is the federal government that has become immoral - not in total, perhaps, but as this band of criminals solidifies its hold, that is fast becoming the case.

If all fifty states were to secede, what then?

I say activists in every state need to be mounting grass roots campaigns to "take back America" not just by planning how to win the 2008 elections, which probably are not going to happen, but by getting right in the face of their state legislators and saying "we're mad as hell and not going to take it any more."

I am NOT promoting sedition or insurrection, or whatever. I AM promoting that states examine their role as one of fifty of "These United States" and investigate what rightful say they should be having if and when the executive branch - or cheney branch - of the Federal Government scraps the Constitution.

5. No, no, no. Every president has that 'martial law' thing. clinton had it.
The right feared clinton would never leave. it's ok. They'll scurry off under various rocks, prolly as billionaires.

12. Lets see, if I remember it right their was gonna be a coup as far back as Truman.
My dad remembered that there was talk that Hoover & MacArthur were going to team up and take out Roosevelt
to save Prohibition. Along the way I remember coups led by Johnson, Nixon, Reagen & even Clinton. None of them
happened & the scoundrels took their money and ran wherever scoundrels run to.

7. They are leveraging for protection when their gig is up.
Everyone knows damn well by now, including the fools who propped them up, that BushCo. Inc. has wiped their asses and pissed all over the Constitution and committed acts that should have had them shot for treason.

Now that the end draws near, the genie is out of the bottle, and they know they have destroyed the Republican Party's chances for years to come at winning elections, they are wanting assurances that they will be treated the same way the 'swept under the rug' Iran Contra affair was treated. After all, it shouldn't be hard at all to find mountains of evidence to imprison all of them and their operatives, when they no longer control and impede the enforcement of this nation's laws.
