Honestly--- I think it's about time that we switch the gender of the leadership in this country.

3. I think the woman thing is a non issue these days. People are use to women in power.
some are just spinning this as Hillary is so disliked. They don't understand that people just don't care for her and look for another reason.
As a woman I can say, the days of people being threatened by strong women is so over.

17. I'm a male and I agree with you
While I think the idea of a woman president is okay to a large majority of Americans, there is still a group that feels threatened by the idea. It wasn't that long ago that a group of evangelical types (part of the Southern Baptists, I think) tried to codify the idea that women were supposed to submit to the authority of their husbands. This was codifying it within their own religion...

And, while the large majority of those threatened by the idea of a woman as president are men, I think there are some women that have drunk the kool-aid about a woman's place being in the home.

24. I agree. I think you'll hear people tell every pollster and everyone
else they speak to that they're ready for a woman.

Once in the booth? Not so many. I think we've got this sickness, this weird cowboy ideal still stuck in our lizard brains in this country, and women's equality is often only given lip-service.

28. I'm not sure about that
I think there might be a hardcore 10-15% that would never vote for a woman because she is a woman.

But, I think more people might not vote for Hillary Clinton because she is a Democrat rather than because she is a woman. Or, because a lot of Republicans perceive her as being a radical leftist intent on bringing communism to America.

Of course, in a close race, those hardcore "no woman" types could swing it, but I doubt many of them are voting Democratic, anyhow.

But, to Republics, when she said, "It takes a village" to raise a child, it was her endorsement of communisn because all good Americans pick themselves up by their own bootstraps...

And, her "Hillary-care" health plan was also, in their eyes, socialism.

20. You've never seen the hostility directed towards Capt. Janeway on a Trek board.
A lot of young men still resent female authority figures. I think they associate it with their mothers and school teachers .

Janeway gets criticized for the same things for which Kirk is praised, etc.

It amazed me and has been a real eye opener.

She's a male sensibility who serves the same DLC corporate masters as the rest of "the guys", dressed as a woman.

Sorry, she's a no-go for me. Nice thought, though.

ETA: I think it's demeaning to demand something of others you are unwilling or unable to do yourself. That's why I always preface the things I feel are right for me, as a person, with a statement reflecting that. If you think Hillary will be a good POTUS, by all means vote for her. I see her as just about the same as all the other rich, white, corporatist candidates for that office, so I won't, but so as not to demean you, I will add, that is only MY opinion.

8. Then, maybe we should choose a woman who embodies some real change?
Peace, equality for all, prosperity, safety nets as a "hand up" for the poorest of us, a real end to homelessness -- only a few of the things I'd be looking for in a President, and would expect to find in a female candidate of any real substance.

I want substantive change, or why even bother at all?

43. I love Maxine Waters. She reminds me of a combination of Barbara Jordan and Shirley Chisholm...
and I think she would make a wonderful and courageous POTUS.

Unfortunately forces on the far Right have already started mobilizing to marginalize her and any power she might acquire against a move forward. Here is their main allegation against her:

Corruption allegations

Waters has long been considered one of the last great practitioners of urban "machine politics." In September 2005, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) named Waters one of the thirteen most corrupt members of Congress. CREW's designation was largely based on the results of an investigation by the Los Angeles Times into non-competitive awards of federal contracts to businesses owned by or connected to members of Waters' family.

http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Maxine_Waters

While I trust neither of the sources cited as far as I can throw them, and believe that the majority of Republicans, white and otherwise, have done far worse, even if these charges are proved to be true (and I don't think they are, btw.) The only reason she's still in Congress and hasn't been charged is that her visibility and power has remained about the same. If she were to make any move forward in this Party, these "corruption" allegations would take her down in about thirty seconds, and we all know it.

FWIW, I believe they some sort of "dirt" on every prominent member of the CBC, and will use that dirt as needed against any of them, should they become too visible, too vocal, or too powerful. The fact that Conyers has been so "out there', and has remained unchallenged tells me he is one of the few they have found nothing against.

I say the DLC's time is over. Hillary is probably the one candidate that the Republicans could actually beat at this point. She's the only one that would actually stir up their disillusioned base. On top of that, she's a DLC corporate sell-out.

So why should we risk everything for a chance at gaining nothing? I don't get it. Is the genitalia thing really that novel?

22. Perhaps that's one thing we have to be grateful to Bush for:
we are now at the point where we can honestly say: what is there to lose -- it couldn't possibly be any worse.

Just kidding!

I agree that it's long past time we women had a bigger say in the governance of our lives and our country. It's a horrible shame to me that my country is so far behind the curve. For goodness sakes, PAKISTAN has had a woman leader well before we have!

Now, as to whether HRC is the right woman... I remain mostly unconvinced, myself. I'd like someone with some stronger convictions and more willingness to go out on a limb. I'd like to think something might change.

25. "Just not this one." The DU sentiment of those opposed to
Hillary and Barack. They almost always express support for the concept of a woman or black becoming president, but "Just not this one." Opposition is either based on policy positions or that "America is not ready for ... " (The latter is the Jackie Robinson dilemma. When do you take the risk to do something bold, when it is always easier to put that off until later - the next election, the next administration, the next congress, the next generation? There are most often more "important" things to do today - win an election, win a pennant, keep the white players and fans happy.)

I respect and agree for the most part with the white guys who are running or might run for the nomination. They have every right to be in there fighting for the nomination. It will be ironic, if, after months of having a woman and a Black leading the presidential polling in our party, we were to end up with two white guys leading our ticket in 2008. I'll still vote for them, but the irony will not be lost on me, since I get a good laugh out of the "good ol' white boys" debating when the Repubs get together.

has to have served in the military. The leading candidates in both parties were never in the military, were they? Clinton, Obama, and Edwards, as well as Giuliani, Thompson, and Romney. Have any of them been in the military?

Since Clinton and Bush and the passing of the WWII generation from political power, military service has not been as big a deal as it was before.

45. No, but the appearance of military service is apparently still in vogue...
And so we get to hear president witless' claims that he spent the Vietnam war protecting the skies of Texas and Alabama from those deadly, long-range Vietnamese bombers.

Anyone who's ever sat in the cockpit of a fighter plane and just stared at all the switches and gages and dials and meters knows immediately that a jerkoff like Bush couldn't possibly assimilate and act on that much information in time to avoid flying into a mountain.

Yet here's a guy who's actually said, on more than one occasion, that he's been to war. Who's feigned landing a jet fighter on the deck of a carrier and declared a somewhat premature "mission accomplished." Whose "military background," according to various spokes-dorks and official liars, prepares him to be a "war president."

And large numbers of Americans actually believe this shit? Of course there's mass media spewing this crap constantly, with essentially no dissenting views expressed anywhere. But it's deeper than that; it's a level of gullibility you normally see only in small children. But it's what you'd expect, I guess, from a country in which at least three out of 10 people say they try to live their lives in accordance with a literal interpretation of an ancient collection of myths that's part fairy tale and part mass murder fest.

I would love us to have a female president. Our very survival may depend on it. Women are the stronger sex guys. Make no mistake and you might as well accept it. Why else would we have tried to supress them at every turn, historically speaking. That being said, and let the slings and arrows fly if they must, but I don't think Hilary is so much a woman anymore as a Corporate/political automaton. Show me a woman with progressive vision in the race (Ahem...Boxer) and I'm her's body and soul.
