Poll question: Will Cheney Still Be In Office on Inauguration Day 2009?
Edited on Mon Jun-25-07 12:07 PM by garybeck
On 3/16/07 I posted this exact same poll question and 73% of the respondents said they thought Cheney would either be impeached or will resign:

Simple question: Do you think Vice President Cheney will still be in office on Inauguration Day 2009?

Results of poll taken on 3/16:
73% No.
19% Yes.
8% Other.

In the last 3 months, while there's plenty more info out about impeachable offenses, I am having less confidence that the Committees are moving fast enough, nor are they determined enough to really do something about this man who is literally destroying our country. It seems more like they're poking around in the dark, rather than going for the jugular. Am I alone in that thinking?

I'll ask the exact same question again and see if the numbers have changed.

Simple question: Do you think Vice President Cheney will still be in office on Inauguration Day 2009?

21. Damn. That's sure putting two and two together!
You're right on the money here, Rosemary. I'd also point out that this is not a scientific poll. Post this at another time and you're likely to get very different results. But essentially, yes, DUers are finally waking up to the reality of a very narrow majority and a complete lack of totalitarian tendencies on our side of the aisle.

Republicans get a 52% voting majority in Congress, they impeach because no one's gonna question what the leadership does. Democrats get the same majority, and they still have to argue and make cases to members from swing districts who may not be so well assured of landing a fat lobby job or a corporate board position after they leave office.

For Dems, impeachment is an entirely different calculus. Doing "the right thing" is never more than icing on the cake.

7. Are you guys batshit crazy?
Who's going to hold Cheney accountable? Nancy Pelosi? Please. Of course he'll survive the scandals, and he'll have a nice retirement to boot.

Guys, I love you all, but get real. Seriously.

11. Cheney doesn't have to resign for health reasons. he's already one of the undead.
Why do you think he spends so much time in that bunker. Thats where his casket is.

10. Will there BE an Inauguration 2009?
That's my big fear -- that they'll find some way to completely suspend the Constitution and impose martial law.

15. The only way Cheney will not be in office in Jan 09 is if he has a heart attack
and keels over dead.

Even then, I think of the movie "Dave" where they found a look-a-like to fill in.

16. Other...
He'll still be there, but will no longer be known as vice president of the United States. His new title will be Reichsmarschall von Cheney, master of the homeland and chief enforcer for the Fourth Reich.

He'll still be there because of those two widely unreported executive orders -- National Security Presidential Directive/NSPD 51 and Homeland Security Presidential Directive/HSPD-20 -- which give BushCo the power to declare martial law and subsume the other two branches of government into the executive in an "emergency." And best of all, Bush himself has the sole power to define an event as an "emergency." Could be Katrina II; could be another staged terrorist attack; could be a riot in Harlem. Could be a peace march or anti-imperialism rally.

Could be just three black guys standing around a corner, lighting up a trash can to get a little heat on a miserable Philly winter night, talking about Malcolm X or Stokely Carmichael or W.E.B. DuBois. That kind of activity might spread to three more people, and a dozen more after that, which would certainly constitute a threat to lawful authority and, therefore, qualify as an "emergency" to a brain-dead little chickenshit sitting in an office that's way, way too big for him. And boom, there goes the country.

Constitution and Bill of Rights? History. Patriot Act and Military Commissions Act? The new law of the land.

Does a right wing coup announce itself any more explicitly than this? Is mass media so corrupt, inattentive, corporatized and useless that even a publicly available, detailed blueprint for locking down the country and ending the great democratic experiment goes unreported, unquestioned, unnoticed? Is it an accident that, if I want to know what's happening in my own country, I must seek out sources of information that originate anywhere but in the US? Is the internet the only place left where traditional news gathering and reporting are still practiced?

I sincerely hope that there's a particularly cozy corner of hell reserved for the editors, reporters, publishers, pundits, wingnut AM motormouths, producers, on-air "talent" and sponsors who create, legitimize, disseminate and pay for the non-stop stream of mindless drivel masquerading as information -- and that the hottest seat of all has Rupert Murdoch's name on it.

17. I am amazed at how perceptions have changed in 3 months. the results were reversed
just 3 months ago. Still trying to figure out why everyone is much less optimistic about Cheney leaving office, compared to just a short while ago. is it because, like me, you would have thought the investigations would be going faster and more effectively than they are?
