Articulate Teen Riles Up O'Reilly

http://www.radaronline.com/exclusives/2007/06/pinhead-16yearold-schools-oreilly.php

Bill O'Reilly is in his element when it comes to badgering the children of 9/11 victims, accusing kidnapping victims of enjoying their captivity, and anything involving loofahs or falafels. But put him in front of an affable and articulate 16-year-old, and he turns to mush.

Last week, O'Reilly imploded during an interview with Jesse Lange, a rising junior at Boulder High School in Colorado (video above). He was on the program to address O'Reilly's criticism of the Boulder High sex-education program. Lange tells Radar that he knew he was brought on for an opposing view, but his main concern before the show was how to address O'Reilly. "I wasn't sure whether or not I should call him Bill or Mr. O'Reilly," Lange tells Radar. "In the end, I decided to call him Bill, because if I called him Mr. O'Reilly, it would imply that I viewed him as some sort of expert or authority figure." Lange also says that in a brief pre-show interview, O'Reilly asked him not to quote the incendiary parts from The O'Reilly Factor For Kids. "Bill expressly asked me not to talk about it on the air," he says, but the book was the perfect counterpoint to O'Reilly's thinly constructed premise.

When Lange did quote from the book, the hotheaded host got so defensive that he labeled Lange a "pinhead" and cut him off when he tried to read the kiddie propaganda book's inflammatory passages. (Fox even took it upon themselves to remove O'Reilly's "pinhead" remark from subsequent airings of the segment.)

As for what it's like being the kid who put a hurting on Bill O'Reilly, Lange says he is getting "a couple hundred Facebook requests a day" and letters from college professors, "just asking me to consider their schools when I apply to college." (He's also single, ladies.) As for any fallout with O'Reilly, Lange says Bill isn't so tough when he's not on the air, "He didn't say anything to me when the segment ended ... he just had his producers cut off my feed."

1. Billo's a cardboard cut-out
And he expects nothing more from his guests. Hit your mark, say your line, then get out of the way for Billo's special brand of genius. Don't throw his own words back in his monkey face, don't insist on facts that contradict his opinion, and shut up when he starts talking. Billo likes his adversaries to be as inanimate as possible, because hitting a live, moving target is out of his skill set.

:D

LOL I almost felt sorry for O'Rielly. That kid did to his book quote exactly what O'Lielly is attempting to do to the school!

You know that stung. Being schooled by a student. :D

9. Orielly was taking a quote out of context.
Orielly was taking a quote out of context to make the school look like they were giving the students a pro-drug and pro-sex message.

So the kid gets out O'rielly's book for kids, and takes an Orielly quote out of context to make it sound like it was a pro-marijuana message. It was classic shit! Watch it when you get home, it's worth it.

then every guest can as well. I think the Bill-O show is becoming a cartoon. Let's hope that soon anyone who listens to him is laughing at him.

31. O'Reilly's whole schtick is an act, as he admitted on Colbert.
Edited on Tue Jun-26-07 01:01 AM by NYC Liberal
The yelling and screaming and cutting the mikes...it's all for ratings. Does Billo actually believe the nonsense he spouts? Maybe. But the whole demeanor is fake.

Like what he said on Colbert:

"I'm effete. I'm not a tough guy. This is all an act."

'Course I'm sure he really is that pompous and egotistical...so he deserves to be knocked down a few notches whenever someone can!

10. Like most guys his size...
He's a bully. They grow-up thinking the world works like the playground and that they can push around people like they did when they were younger. Even if they're normally a normal person, they often revert back to their bully roots. Just because you're 6'4" doesn't give you the right to physically intimdate others. The other teachers he taught high school with was very interesting when she talked about how he used his size. On the other hand you take someone like Kucinich who is five inches shorter than me, and he shows the character and patience from being abused by larger people. The simple fact that the taller politician usually wins is one reason this country is so screwed-up. O'Reilly that has a nationwide state every night versus Kucinich who has to fight for every minute of coverage is the epitome of why we have so many bullies in charge.

Funny, most of the hypersensitive assholes I know tend to be shorter guys - ever heard of the Napoleon complex?

And about your bizarre theory about the taller politician winning/being an asshole: Bush is 5'11. Kerry is 6'4. I rest my case.

Some poster named dbeesh says:

Gee, I saw that interview and Jesse (I won't say Mr. Lange because that means he deserves my respect) looked like an incompetent moron, defending the sex and drug education presenters who said condoms are unnecessary and drugs can be fun. Jesse need to get a haircut and come out of the 1990s with those glasses. He looked like a cross between Dee Snider of Twisted Sister and a pre-pubescent Howard Stern. The cartoon buzzards on Bugs Bunny comes to mind too. I thought O’Reilly wiped the floor with him but still gave him credit for trying.

24. I've been on that show
and let me tell you, I know what it takes to get in Billo's face.. the odds are against you from the start.

I was let into the green room, having not been offered a THING to drink, when I asked for some water, they pointed at the soda machine in the hallway. I ended up drinking from the faucet in the sink, and it looked like they'd killed a baby in it. The couch looked like a bunch of monkeys had had an orgy on it, stained, couldn't even sit on it.

They led me out to the slaughter room, sat me in a chair. The room was DARK, full of shiney wrapped pipes, and those super graphics they put behind you to make it look like you are in a city, like LA (I was in LA at the time). All the camera stuff is wrapped in foil, and surrounds you. I was told, after they stuck the earpiece in my ear, to TALK TO A BIG WOODEN BOX. No Monitor, I couldn't see O'Reilly, OR Myself, only an insane voice ranting in my ear. I felt like it was a CIA interragation, or that I'd been kidnapped by aliens.

They checked to see if I was receiving, I had a little knob to turn him up or down, and BOOM I was on the air. Like I said, I felt like I was disconnected from everything, so it's difficult to go on the attack, no table to rest notes on, and you don't know if they'll show on the tube if you look at them.

SO they have you at the disadvantage from the get go, and it doesn't stop.

The next day, he had a poor kid who'd lost his dad on 911, and O'Reilly was saying shit about the guy's mother, threatened to, or actually DID turn off his microphone. I wish he'd had had me on sitting across a table from him, because it would have been my pleasure to reach across and get a hold of his necktie, and BUTTER IT. A neck tie is a handy item in a conflagration, you pretty much have total control :)

So MY HAT'S OFF to this BRAVE YOUNG MAN! I know more than the average person what he went through WHILE doing the thing he did.

BRAVO, DUDE! We need 10,000 more JUST LIKE YOU!

THIS YOUNG MAN IS A LEADER, keep an eye on him, I have a feeling we'll be hearing MORE from him. Maybe Prez someday :)

35. the biggest thing that annoys me about O'Reilly
He has that "authoritative voice of authority" thing down. If you don't fact-check a thing he says, he comes across sounding like he knows what he's talking about. It's like the "southern preacher" thing, if you get that act down, religious people feel like they're obligated to listen. It's impossible to reach members of his audience when they rebut everything you say with "But he seems so authoritative, like he really knows what he's talking about!"

On the backyard fighter circuit (as seen on Youtube) there's this scary black guy called Kimbo or Kimba something. He's big, he's bulked out, and I guarantee that one of his fists would put the lights out of any of us here. But he's not invincible. Skilled fighters can take him down. Most of his fights are with average joes who simply cannot stand up to getting mule-kicked in the head repeatedly. But when he fights someone who knows what he's doing, his handlers go berserk and interfere with the fight like they were on WWF. Any cheap shot Kimba might make is overlooked while they call out his opponent for moves that are legal given that the fight is bare-knuckles. So long as they can control the conditions this guy fights in, he will always come out on top. The same goes for O'Reilly. What's more, O'Reilly's people can edit the tapes before they air. So long as they can avoid appearances of discontinuity in the interview, they can do whatever the hell they want.

43. I have a young lady friend for Jesse
My husband's boss is Australian. His fifteen-year-old is visiting right now from Down Under. She's lovely, she's funny, and after hearing me say that I had no love lost for the occupant of the White House, I got a mischievous grin and a, "George Bush is a real shit, isn't he?"

Her dad scolded her a bit. I said, "Three-fourths of the country agrees with you, sweetie."

48. This kid is impressive and he scared the big guy
When a person of stature like his Billness stoops to calling a teenager a pinhead, you know the kid is on to something. Jesse is articulate, intelligent, and honest. Billy Babe is none of these. He became nervous when Jesse refused to be intimidated, and became angry when the kid (I use the term totally respectfully) out-foxed him by quoting what the Big Dullard had, himself written.

O'Reilly is a fool and a charlatan. Thank you Mr. Lange for showing him up on his own show.
