Minutes after Thomas Bonner Sr. was found not guilty of a battery charge that could have landed him in jail for as much as 20 years, one of his younger female relatives was arrested for causing a disturbance outside the courtroom.

But despite what was considered to be good news for the Bonner family, a girl believed to be Bonner Sr.’s niece, 20-year-old Cassandra Johnson, was arrested for two counts of battery to a police officer, both Class D felonies, two counts of resisting law enforcement and disorderly conduct as she left the courtroom. Another woman, 20-year-old Shelby Oglesby, was arrested for disorderly conduct.

Mary Ann Bonner became outraged — along with a handful of other friends and relatives — when Grimes quickly shot back, “Yeah, then you would have been dead, right along with your dead son.”

Bonner Sr.’s pastor, Billy Hollins of St. Steven Baptist Church in Jeffersonville, called Grimes’ words “raw, crude and savage.”
