Smithville, TX (AHN) - A priest at a Catholic Church in Smithville has been charged with drunken driving for Monday night's crash in which at least 10 people were injured. Reverend Karel Fink was arrested after he crashed his pickup truck into a local restaurant and a field test showed his blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit in Texas.
Being under the influence of alcohol, the 61-year-old pastor inadvertently hit the accelerator instead of brakes and ended up crashing the truck about ten feet into the Mexican restaurant, Trooper David Adkins said.
Five people were taken to the hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries, he told the AP.
A spokesman for the Catholic Diocese of Austin revealed that Fink had been struggling with alcoholism and recently underwent treatment for alcohol abuse.
