GOP Senators back Lugar’s Iraq shift.

“Republican senators expressed support today for Indiana Sen. Richard G. Lugar’s call for an immediate change of course in Iraq,” CQ reports.

“I hail what he did,” said Sen. John W. Warner, R-Va., former chairman of the Armed Services Committee. “It shows the strength that each of us individually must bring to this debate.” Warner said that he too feels the September reporting date is too long to wait to revise U.S. war policy. {_}

There is a growing feeling among senators that the U.S. presence in Iraq needs review, said, adding that he agrees that troops levels should be reduced “as soon as it is realistic to do it.” {…}

Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, said that it is important to find out if the administration is listening to differing views on Iraq. “If they’re not, I think that many of us are going to look at legislation that will limit the number of troops,” he said. Voinovich intends to submit a letter to the administration detailing an exit plan that would include engagement with the Arab League and the United Nations, he said.

2. Warner is not going to run for re-election and Lugar is an old man whose time is up.
He just won't admit it.
He ain't no damn moderate!
He supported this illegal war and these spying neocons in the White House just as much as George Allen did!!

how soon we forget.

Remember the iraq study group? remember all the bipartisan uproar for a new course? remember what we got? escalation and another blank check funding.

I get down on my knees and pray....
We won't get fooled again.

4. We need a big Ad at the top of the page showing the # of Repubs calling for pull out in Iraq...
If we had one, that number would be three -- Warner, Lugar, Voinich

7. Let's not add them to the number until they specifically call for a pull out/redeployment...
but I agree with you on Hagel. I think he would stand with Lugar and Warner.

Thats 7 + 50 = 57.

10. My mathematically inclined friend, there are more than 7 out there ....
It is all about the polling numbers and winning reelection.

They pay big bucks for those numbers to be analyzed in ways that tell them how it will affect their constituents' opinions and their votes.

It is going to happen -- more than 10 Repubs will call for a pull out/redeployment of troops out of Iraq. They will not all announce at once, but they are waiting for the right time politically.

5. The Party Proposes September Name Change To The CYA Party
The most telling part of Lugar's statement last night is how there's an urgency to deal with Iraq before next year's elections.

Now, what's Warner's deal? Is he running next year or not? Will he join Lugar or continue to play toadie to the right wing?

Until I see Lugar vote against a supplemental or make some other serious break like a Hagel or even a Gordon Smith, this is just pure hot air...cause ya wanna bet when the Mitchenator tightens the screws on the next defense bill, Lugar lines up with the continuation of this military and political clusterfuck.

9. Oh, darn the luck!
If only these fellows had seen fit to speak out and encourage their fellow Republicans just a few weeks ago when the de-escalation bill was coming up for a vote! What a shame they couldn't possibly find a live microphone or a rolling camera to get in front of to speak their courageous piece when it actually mattered.

Motherfuckers, every goddam last one of them. If I had my way, every body bag coming back from Iraq would be routed through their office before heading off to its final destination.

14. My god, the elephant's sprung a leak!
Took the fuckers long enough. They still authorized a monkey to fight a war and turned a wilfull blind eye to his deadly incompetence for three years.

But at least the old verties of democracy hold true: if you're down long enough, the Republicans will kick you.
Fucking sheep.
