Blessed are....
Matthew 5

The Beatitudes

1Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2and he began to teach them saying:
3"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called sons of God.
10Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

As it is specifically religious in nature.

28. this is the greatest statement of behavior in the Bible and good for
anyone. Blessed be you for posting this and maybe those who don't get it can think about it. Nothing in that sentiment is mockable. IMHO.

11. I get the point
But I have to be consistent with myself. If I'm going to question people for posting attacks on religion in the General Discussion Forum I have to question people for posting support for religion in the General Discussion Forum.

6. Agreed. I was just making the point that if a christian posted scripture, the reaction
would be much different than the reaction to this buddhist thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=1190941&mesg_id=1190941

my point was made, and I emailed the moderator that they can move or delete this thread.

19. On the other hand
Had someone posted quotes from Martin Luther King Jr., I doubt very many would be offended.

Personally, I think we need to hear words of inspiration from good people of all faiths and of none.

13. Seriously, I am the first to recommend this?
I saw this from your post in the buddhist thread.

To be fair, the buddhist stuff was philosophy that anyone can get behind. This biblical stuff is specifically referencing God.

"It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God" (Matthew 19:24)

And would answer and say to them, "Let the man with two tunics share with him who has none, and let him who has food do likewise." (Luke 3:11)

Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you. (Matthew 5:42)

He who is generous will be blessed, for he gives some of his food to the poor. (Proverbs 22:9)

1 Tim. 6:10. For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith, and pierced themselves with many a pang.

15. I see your point from the "Ommmm" thread
But it's important to consider the difference between the Sermon on the Mount and the Dalai Lama's list of advice. Anyone who does not believe in the Christian God will not be receptive to Christian scripture, and as you expected, many will decide to attack it, Christopher-Hitchens-style, even when it poses no real threat to them.

The Buddhist list was constructed in much the same way as a horoscope- it is intentionally vague enough to apply to anyone. It would be almost impossible for anyone, even militant atheists, to take offense at things like "If you can't help someone, at least do no harm to them." So the two posts really aren't equivalent.

Personally, I think God as described in the bible is ridiculous, but I have no reason to shout you down when you post something like this. Atheists have to disbelieve in all religions equally. Doling out abuse prejudicially to Christianity is hypocritical.

16. thank you, a great post
my point was the unequal abuse is interesting, not that there is abuse at all.
For the record, as I've stated elsewhere, I think there is value to be gleaned from all philosophies, and I choose to revere them all, personally, as valid to those who adhere to it.

21. Where are all the hostile responses?
You posted in this thread

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=1193378&mesg_id=1194534

that people were hostile towards your Christian scripture thread, while they were positive towards a Buddhist thread. Where is the hostility here? There is none so far. But now that you've whined about it, you'll probably encounter some.

22. ahhh...you know what? you're right.
I was working on three different threads today, and they blended together in my mind. The hostility I encountered was in the other threads, not this one.

Since I promised not to post in the buddhist thread any longer, you'll hopefully find the response in this one.

hostility was not the right word for this thread.

23. In defense of those that would take exception to this
It is not there fault that they have such a negative feeling toward religion and by association biblical quotes.
The Fundie preachers have poisoned the well as far as the bible is concerned by using it as a whip to heard there sheep around.
and in the process has nullified the great and profound sayings of Jesus in the processes.
But you stopped with the beatitudes, but if you had printed the rest of the sermon on the mount it could have been considered as philosophical of social revolutionary teachings. Because most christians and non Christians probably never read it.

29. so, the fundies have poisoned the well. I suppose you could say
that Margaret Murray O'Hare poised the well for atheists. I don't let others determine the philosophy that I follow and no should anyone else. There is great wisdom and grace in the Bible, there for all to read. The rest? Its important to someone. So are the tenets of atheism. I would
never mock an atheist for their beliefs and never lump them in with idiots like O'Hare. It would
be nice if people would stop lumping Christians in with idiots like the fundies. If you study
their philosophy, you will find they are heretics. Not Christians.

11 When men strive together one with another, and the wife of the one draweth near for to deliver her husband out of the hand of him that smiteth him, and putteth forth her hand, and taketh him by the secrets: 12 Then thou shalt cut off her hand, thine eye shall not pity her.
