Getting the New iphone?

Is anyone at DU getting the new iphone? I heard that all the major newspapers gave it farely good reviews. However, I also heard that all some of the major newspapers writers who wrote the reviews had good relationships with the Apple company and had written other pro-Apple products books. So, is anyone buying the new phone when it comes out? I am planning on waiting at least until the second generation comes out in that most first generation products have problems that need to be worked out later. I might not even get the phone at all. I would like to find out more about the phone, find out what it really does, and how it really works.

35. so I access apps and scroll with a trackball instead of

a touch screen...not all that hot to me. I can play my MP3's and surf...GPS is there with a little downloaded app...and I have an internal memory card with more space than i need...hmmm...blackberry anyone? Why all the hype?

and have for some time...just got the Pearl, though. It has a phone...webbrowser...email...pda...MP3 playback capability and tons of little apps you can load...the iPhone does have a cooler interface...but it doesn't do much more than what I am using now...

33. The difference for me (and it's a big one) would be WiFi.

Seattle has so much free WiFi you could practically live off it. On days when I've been out of the office all day, if I hauled around my laptop I could stay on top of everything with free wifi, including a nice lunchtime in the park.

A real web browser is also a pretty nice improvement, IMO, as is iTunes.

but the thing is...why does Apple act like this is the second-coming? It is not that big a deal...just a small next step...and someone will come along and make the next step from this...

I'm presonally very excited about it, not because I want one, but because I think it launches the nextgeneration of hand held tech. (I do think it seems quite superior to anything else on the market.)

wait until it's been out long enough for Apple to work out all the bugs first. Then it *might* be worth the money. I think the idea is cool, but I would be too afraid I would break the screen somehow.

... already available in China. Samsung will probably have a version with the same features within a year. And I won't have to go with
AT&T, which NYTimes says has the worst reception of all the major carriers. The minimum contract they have available for the iphone is going to be 60 bucks a month, and I get less than I'd get now for that.

People are already lining up to buy the iPhone, even though it doesn't go on sale for a few more days. To get it, you're going to need to sign a two year contract. AT&T always claims they make you sign contracts in order to subsidize the phone, but this time, they're just lying--you're purchasing this phone from Apple! Apple's made the iPhone as sleek and easy to use as their other products, and it's packed with features. In other countries, there are no restrictions on what features a phone can have, but in the U.S., the cell phone companies control what a cell phone is allowed to do. Let's say you want GPS....U.S. phone companies want to be the ones to sell you that service, so they make cell phone makers deactivate the GPS feature. Apple has been aggressive towards these cell phone companies, and maintain that no one can say what the phone does except them. Apple has made this a true consumer purchase, letting the consumer decide what it will do, as it should be. So ultimately the iPhone is going to democratize the cell phone industry.

(the reason I would want one would be for the internet access and the gps...but I would want to see one demonstrated first. Sure hope they come down in price before I would get one.))

38. Clark is a little over the top when it comes to new toys

and it has burned him a couple of times. The only thing he points out here of use is the GPS factor...which you can get around...and the fact that AT&T is ripping you off with a contract. That may be the only two things they 'change.'

I haven't been drawn into getting the "newest, latest, biggest & baddest" trendy market gizmo since the internet. But they've sucked me in on this one.

Heck, I've had the same boring phone since 2004 (I can talk on it, but that's about it) and haven't had any complaints with it at all. But after seeing this new gadget, I finally uttered the words Madison Avenue lives for... "I have GOT to get me one of those..."

And, maybe it'll convince me to give Apple a third chance...

41. Not yet, but it's intrigued me.

I'm already on AT&T (formerly Cingular, which was formerly AT&T. See Stephen Colbert's take on it.) so that's never a problem. I've also never had the service issue that it seems like everyone else has had on this network, but that's anecdotal evidence so take it for what it's worth.

They've already addressed a concern I had regarding battery life by upping the talk time to 8 hours (very impressive for a phone/PDA of that size).
But there's no 3G network on the phone, and although Wi-Fi is a great idea, there are times when I'm riding in a car nowhere near a Wi-Fi connection and might want to browse the web.
Also, I don't think there's going to be Stereo Bluetooth, so I think I'll wait until the second generation of phones if I decide to get one.

42. Yes - as soon as I can save the money

My phone is 6 years old, battery doesn't hold a charge, and the case is crumbling off the corners. My 18 month old Palm, died several months ago, after 12 months of hard boots and loosing all data -- sometimes weekly and has.been.totally.unusable for sometime; my iPod is the original one my husband bought 6 years ago, also doesn't hold a charge, so it is mostly used at my office instead of a radio -- which is fine since the DFW metroplex doesn't seem to have a decent Oldies station.

Since a new phone will cost $100 - $200 (IF I can find a candy bar type phone -- I hate phones that slides or flips); a new PDA will cost about $200, and an iPod more than $200...an iPhone fits perfectly -- and looks like 1) it will save me money, 2) have fewer things to carry around, and 3) has an easy user interface, so it will be a joy to use.
