That’s how MoveOn.org is describing House Energy and Commerce Chairman John D. Dingell in radio spots beginning Wednesday that target his go-slow approach to global-warming initiatives.
The ads coincide with a markup in Dingell’s committee of a bill the group says doesn’t do enough to stall climate change.
MoveOn members, dressed in dinosaur costumes, plan to deliver dinosaur balloons and toys to the offices of the Michigan Democrat, currently the nation’s longest-serving congressman.
Since a “Dingellsaurus” is not defined in Webster’s dictionary, a father in the ad helpfully explains to his son that the creature is “someone who’s been in Congress so long, he forgets about the people who sent him there.”
The ad, slated to run in Michigan, accuses Dingell of “standing in the way of the first energy bill ever that would really combat global warming.” The Dingellsaurus is a very “dangerous” dinosaur, the dad warns, “because if the Dingellsaurus gets his way, we all could be extinct.”
Committee spokeswoman Jodi Seth questioned the group’s command of the facts, saying Dingell is fully committed to moving a separate climate-change package in the fall. She also asserted that the energy-efficiency requirements in the bill the committee marks up Wednesday would eliminate 8 billion tons of carbon dioxide by 2030.
