Sweet Googly Moogly
Fox just said in the UK they often use "Asian" to describe anyone east of them. A guy was reporting on the Glasgow JFB (Jeep Fire Bomb) and said even though witnesses reported an Asian he could mean someone from India, Iran, or anywhere in the middle east.

UK DUers is that true? Would people refer to people from areas like Iran as Asians? For now my hokey meter is way up.

1. FWIW:
In British English, the word "Asian" usually refers to those of South Asian origin, particularly Indians, Pakistanis, and Bangladeshis, and also the less numerous Sri Lankans, Nepalis, and Maldivians.<1> Additionally, British who marked the "Other Asian" category on the UK census were of Afghan, Iranian, Iraqi, Turkish and Yemeni ancestries.<2> It may also refer to people from other parts of Asia,<3> but those of East Asian (such as Chinese or Japanese) or Southeast Asian origin are usually not included in the term; they may instead be called "Oriental", which is a term no longer used in American English.

2. Read Edward Said's landmark book,
Orientalism. It offers a fascinating perspective on the topic of differences between perception of the east and the west.

The basic answer to your question is yes, that's a common reference.

6. I guess my question is, when did India and Iran become NOT a part of Asia?

8. It
just sounded weird to me. You have to remember, I was raised in a country that doesn't call Mexicans Americans. We have North American, Central America, South American, and Canada which I like to call Cold Americans.

I would have thought "Middle Eastern" would be more in use in Europe.

9. Let me explain the difference
Edited on Sat Jun-30-07 02:31 PM by Bucky
This is an African

These are Europeans

And this man is Asian

So, you see, the differences are as clear as black and white.
