Dozens at City Hall speak out in opposition to proposed immigration resolutions

Vietnam war veteran Roberto de la Cruz told the Bakersfield City Council about his American born mother who was deported to Mexico, swept up in "Operation Wetback" during the 1950's.

"She was born in Orange County, and Orange County is as American as you can get," said de la Cruz.

He and others fear proposed resolutions by Bakersfield City Councilman David Couch targeting illegal immigrants will once again lead to anti-immigrant hysteria, whether or not they're in the country legally.

One resolution declares English the official language of Bakersfield.
The second declares Bakersfield is not and shall not be a "sanctuary city" for illegal immigrants. The third asks city staff to look into which city services could be denied to illegal immigrants.

In San Rafael (Marin County) they flew some DHS copters around the Canal Zone (where the day laborers gather) and everyone went home for a few days.

My dad used to tell me about the "No dogs or Okies" signs that greeted him when he arrived there from of course Oklahoma.

In the 50's I can remember a big "N-words go home" painted on the back of a billboard near Airport Dr and Norris Rd north of the river.

Now it looks as if they've found a new scapegoat.
