she asked this question of her guests Andy Card and Leon Panetta. She even repeated the question and suggested that Cheney might be asked to resign as further disclosures of his hands-on involvement in Plamegate continue.

AMAZING. Nora O'Donnell is no friend of the Left (or middle). That she would pose the question and discuss it so casually like a natural, possible consequence of what we have learned today with the possiblitliy of new disclosures. Amazing!

If Cheney DOES resign, that clears the deck to IMPEACH Chimpy, doesn't it?

They may sacrifice Dick in exchange for impeachment being ruled out entirely for Chimpy. They may strike a deal where they ask Dick to step aside for "health reasons" and put someone with Presidential aspirations in 2008 in that spot. I've thought for a long while that this may be the case since it appears the Democrats have all the early momentum. Installing a V.P. would be a marketing coup for the G.O.P. as they can use that pulpit as free campaign advertising for the election.

Personally, if I can't have them both impeached, keep Dick. His ego and sinister record keeps the G.O.P.'s tactics and immorality in the spotlight and keeps a new V.P. from being someone that can make waves.

I didn't see the report, but it sounds like O'Donnell brought it up with the same sort of inflection that someone might ask, “Do you think the Tiger Woods will have a good year?” That is, treating it rather casually, as if they’ve known all along that Cheney was about to be ousted. It’s ridiculous, as all the major news outlets have treated this bunch of crooks as untouchable for the last six years, and knelt at the altar of the Permanent Republican Majority.

It could be that we’re seeing the emergence of a new conventional wisdom, one that treats the Bush White House as the stumblebums they are with no transition from their earlier reverence toward them as gods among men. It would be quite jarring to people with actual consciences or a working ethical compass, but I have little doubt that the blow-dried glitterati will make the leap with nary a hitch. If Cheney, heretofore a giant, suddenly becomes persona non grata, keep an eye on the incredible mental gymnastics performed by our faultless media commentators as they try to act like they knew it all along.

As I understand it, impeachment means removal from office, which makes the former office holder open to criminal indictments. When Ford pardoned Nixon, it wasn't to protect him from impeachment but rather from a regular criminal trial.

28. It Messes Up The Deck Chairs...

OK...Cheney is forced to resign...ala Agnew...then what? Numbnutz gets to name his successor. With a Democratic Senate needed to confirm, he can't ramrod through a toadie...but he can find a moderate...his own Ford who will get the job (and the "front runner" status in the '08 GOOP prez derby) with the quid pro quo of lots of pardons...early and often.

I really like how this bodes for the Wilson's civil litigation. If Fitz proves the obstruction, Cheney will need to cash in those Halliburton futures.
