Lovie Smith is such a great guy. He is well loved in Chicago and I hope that his reputation ends up even bigger than Mike Ditka's. A Lovie Smith restaurant in the "Viagra Triangle" :eyes: would be a nice addition.

We shouldn't downplay the role that the Players Association had in this.

Unfortunately, now comes the Super Bowl Hype weeks... :(

They may be black, but much more importantly the record proves that they are the best coaches in their respective conferences.

I want to see Dungy win because he has a greater body of work than Lovie.

Tony Dungy got a raw deal in Tampa Bay- he built the team that went to the Superbowl down there. My heart still goes out to him over his son's death last year.

30. The media handling is sickening.
The AFC Champsionship award was so botched, they had a white reporter give the trophy to Tony Dungy and the second question out of his mouth was how does it feel to be one of the true. Has anyone else read Ralph Ellison's invisible man? They then went to the tunnels with the better black reporter after the commercial break.

51. Pretty Weak, CV
The issue here is the socially relevant aspect of two black coaches leading their teams in the country's biggest sporting event.

It's not about football, therefore, does not belong in the sports forum. And, you're 2 cents had absolutely no bearing on the actual reason the thread was started.

And, you didn't think anyone would take it to heart? Sheesh!

52. End of story.
I didn't realize that who coachs what team had any social relevance at all. Just because the media wants us to believe that sport are equally important as everything else on the news by giving it as much coverage as it does doesn't make it so.

But, i do believe that there is social relevance to the racial divide being marginally reduced but at a high profile event.

55. I hope you are right about that.
But I was thinking:
Not one hungry person will eat because of this.
Not one uninsured person will get healthcare because of this.
Not one homeless person will find shelter because of this.
Not one person will escape poverty because of this.
Not one troop will be sent home because of this.
Not one disease will be cured because of this.
Global warming will not end because of this.
The slaughter in Iraq will not stop because of this.
Inequality will not end because of this.
Our lost civil liberties will not be restored because of this.
Our wages will not rise because of this.

So it didn't seem that socially relevant to me. Maybe you are right, I hope your right.

I'm just not one who thinks it's really that bad for society to have an organized form of decompression. Having nothing of this sort (or movies or tv) would build an awfully big bomb.

Dungy may be a religious wacko, but I really do appreciate the way he brought a lot of black assistants into the game while he was head coach at Tampa Bay. And now, many of them are successful head coaches in their own right.

The Rooney Rule, as hamfisted as it seems, may be making a difference. (The Rooney Rule, named for Steelers chairman Dan Rooney who proposed it, requires any team with a head-coaching vacancy to interview at least one minority candidate.)
