More than half of Alabamians believe that President Bush is doing only a fair or poor job, the results of a new Press-Register/University of South Alabama poll suggest.
The findings mark the first time in the history of such surveys that a majority of the state's residents have rated Bush's overall performance as less than good.
But while support for Bush's handling of the Iraq war has also sagged, survey respondents remain wary of putting congressional Democrats in charge. Asked who they trust to do a better job, half named Bush, while only 29 percent chose the Democrats.
"Voters are just conflicted," said Natalie Davis, a political scientist and pollster at Birmingham-Southern College. While they now consider the Iraq invasion to have been a mistake, she said, they have also bought into Bush's assertion -- disputed by some experts -- that terrorists "will follow us here" if not defeated in Iraq.
