Solar power makes tiny village beam

Quoth CNN (as a headline story, no less), an instance of every little bit helping:

GUDDA, India (CNN) -- In Gudda, a village with very little, residents are literally beaming. Just two years ago, villagers had never seen light after dark, unless it came from the moon. Then, solar light arrived and changed everything.

"When the lanterns first arrived, the villagers asked, 'What is this?' " says Hanuman Ram, the local solar engineer. "I explained to them how it worked. Then slowly, as people saw it, they said, 'Wow, what a thing this is!' "

Just a reminder that some Good Things happen out there in the world too, I suppose. I'm kinda boggled that was frontpaged on CNN - I mean, there might be a celebrity somewhere who ate breakfast today that should be there instead. But I'm not going to argue.

3. Not only light is important..

One of the characteristics of extremely primitive conditions is that there is little to no communication with the outside world.

Having even a small amount of electricity changes that.

Radio and even television can be run from batteries charged by solar cells and this opens a village such as is spoken of in the article to a wealth of news and information that they are otherwise unable to access.

Even something as simple as a CB radio could give the villagers not only a means of listening but of talking back, say in the event of a disaster or a severe illness. If nothing else they would be able to ask for information and advice on how to handle the situation.

Solar power in remote villages opens them to the world outside..
