Fred Phelps is going to Minnesota!
http://www.minnesotamonitor.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=2184

The Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., plans to stage protests at funerals of victims of the 35W bridge collapse to state that God made the bridge fall because he hates America, and especially Minnesota, because of its tolerance of homosexuality.
The church and its pastor, the Rev. Fred Phelps, have become notorious over recent years for their claim that the attack of 9/11 was an act of God's vengeance and their determination to make that case at the funerals of U.S. soldiers who died in Iraq.

In a press release issued the day after the bridge collapse, the church called for protests at the funerals and outlined its feelings about the relationship between God's plan and the sins of Minneapolis and Minnesota, which it calls the "land of the Sodomite damned."

Reached at the church, Shirley Phelps Roper, who is both the daughter of the pastor and one of the attorneys for the church, said that America, and Minnesota especially, have alienated God by its tolerance for homosexuality, and that the bridge collapse was an act of God's vengeance. She said:

"The bridge stood in place by the word of God and it fell by the word of God...Each of these little events is just a harbinger of the coming destruction of this American experiment. We are delivering the final call of the doomed nation."
She said, as they have done for years, members of the church would stand "lawfully and peacefully on the public right of way" near the funerals and "put in the air words of praying and instruction and warning."
The signs that the protesters will wave will read:

"God cast down the bridge... Thank God for 9/11... America is doomed... God hates fags... God hates fag enablers... God hates Minnesota."

8. I think there is a ban on giving him live news coverage thankfully.
But I still refuse to give up my freedom of speech just because of idiots like him.

4. Wonder where they will be allowed to protest
Edited on Wed Aug-08-07 07:16 PM by ayeshahaqqiqa
I'm hoping it's akin to the Bush "free speech zones" so that the bereaved don't have to see them.

We know that, of the known victims, one left a devastated husband and daughters and another left two children orphan and destitute. Of the missing, one is a pregnant woman and her two year old child-the husband is said to be "destroyed" by what happened. There is something especially sick and twisted that Phelps and his family would come and protest.

Question: was the Native American who died a member of a sovereign Nation? If so, will she be buried on their land? Could the Nation keep Phelps away--after all, they have sovereignty over some things, and I would think this would include who can and cannot enter their land.

9. Minnesota is "the land of the Sodomite damned"??
The Minnesota that (a portion of which) elected this upstanding citizen to Congress? :sarcasm:

That's none other than Michelle Bachmann in the background, hiding in the bushes (Bushes?) lest all those gay and lesbian protesters at the Minn. Capitol spray The Gay on her by accident. :puke:

On the other hand, Phelps & Co. will be damned sorry if they happen to run into an old acquaintance of mine who is now a well-known activist up there, is a virtuoso with a bullhorn, and really, REALLY hates homophobes...

14. Really "Land of the Sodimite Damned" sounds like a
B horror movie, and folks in Minneapolis prefer San Fransisco of the north.

11. Oh, good Lord...
...why can't this complete waste of skin be turned into a pillar of salt already! The citizens of the Twin Cities definitely do not need this excrement.

12. I really wish that someone would run all of these bastards down with a Mack truck.
They do nothing positive at all. They mock and torment those who suffer the worst at their most grief stricken time. I guarantee you if they ever showed up at the funeral of someone I care about, it would be me and my boys, black masks and lead pipes for these sons of whores. They absolutely disgust me.

15. No shit!
The local cops should just linger over their donuts at the coffee shop, and let events take their natural course when those assholes show up at the funerals.

13. If Phelps wasn't serious, his site would be really funny.
The first time I saw it I assumed it was an over the top satire and laughed my ass off. Seriously, who could believe that God Hates Swedes is for real? Then I realized who was responsible for it. If you can find it, check out Michael Moore harassing Phelps and friends by following them around in an RV full of extremely stereotypical gay guys who bust into song and dance every time the Reverend starts a protest.

16. Moore had the right way to deal with these people
They want violence so they can sue--that's how they make their money--they are all lawyers! But if a bunch of gays come over to them holding hands, smiling, and maybe trying to give them a flower or something, they would run away!

17. The funerals for the victims who were found have already been held
There are 8 people still missing, but given the difficulties in searching the river there are no estimates being given on when the recovery effort will be finished. Hopefully, Phelps and his followers will have lost interest in coming here by the time the next funerals are held.

"Reached at the church, Shirley Phelps Roper, who is both the daughter of the pastor and one of the attorneys for the church, said that America, and Minnesota especially, have alienated God by its tolerance for homosexuality, and that the bridge collapse was an act of God's vengeance."

Minnesota especially? Okay, Minnesota and the Twin Cities in particular do tend to be pretty tolerant of all minorities, including the GLBT community - but we got nothin' on San Francisco. Using the Phelps' logic, you just have to wonder why the Golden Gate Bridge is still standing. :sarcasm:

Heathen that I am, I was always proud that the area had developed a reputation for tolerance.
