http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/2007/08/pentagon-paid-n.htmlThe Pentagon paid a small South Carolina company — run by twin sisters — nearly $1 million to ship two 19-cent washers to an Army base in Texas, Bloomberg reports. And over six years, the company, C&D Distributors in Lexington, S.C., collected $20.5 million in fraudulent shipping charges from the Pentagon.
The twins used the money to buy beach houses, high-end automobiles, boats, jewelry and vacations, WYFF-TV in Greenville, S.C., says.
Today, the company and one sister, Charlene Corley, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to launder money. Corley's sister, Darlene Wooten, committed suicide last year.
Corley, 46, was fined $750,000 and faces a maximum prison term of 20 years on each count when she is sentenced, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin McDonald. The company and two officials were barred from federal contracts in December.
