I hate seeing that kind of thing. The story says she may have turned violent cause she was in pain from her teeth. :-(

18. Or just in pain, period
I was listening to a report on the radio a few months ago about how circus elephants virtually all have terrible arthritis from inactivity and the jostling on the trains. I think all circuses should go the Cirque du Soleil route and completely eliminate the use of animals. It's terrible for them to suffer for our entertainment.

I think the size is supposed to be 48 x 48 pixels. This is more like 48 x36.

edit: this one has an "invisible" white border to make it 48 x 48.

17. That's awful.
Cartoons are okay, but not actual elephants, who suffer enough insult just being associated with that disgusting party.

From abuse at a circus to a makeshift gallows?

20. I actually know the story behind this.
This as a circus elephant - back at the turn of the century. It is a wild animal, afterall, and went on a rampage in a smallish town in Tennessee. It rampaged through the streets and killed a few people before the men of the town finally rounded it up and hung it to it's death.

I can't remember any more of the particulars, but I remember seeing that photo in my childhood and hearing my great-grandparents tell its story.

22. Abuse of circus elephants has been far too common.
Here's an account of poor "Unlucky Mary's" murder

Circuses of a more modern sort arose in Europe in the second half of the 1700’s.Records of the 1st appearance by an elephant in these events vary. Jacob Crowninshield brought in the first elephant to America. The 2-year-old Asiatic female was brought to New York City on April 13th 1796 and exhibited on the corner of Broadway and Beaver Street.

A sad story of such a circus elephant is that of Unlucky Mary. Unlucky Mary was falsely accused of killing some 18 people and was hung in Erwin, Tennesssee – the town where she had been performing in 1916. She was visiting the town as part of the Sparks world famous shows. In reality she killed only her keeper, who had mistreated her. Trailed and found guilty she was hung from a railway derrick on September 13th 1916. When the chain used to hoist Mary into the air snapped the impact from the resulting fall stunned the elephant into a stuporous silence and she offered little resistance when she was hanged a second time.

38. The National Geographic channel had a show recently
about how elephants, both captive and wild, have been becoming increasingly violent toward humans. Many of the captive elephants witnessed the massacre of their entire families as infants when they were kidnapped for human entertainment, and many wild elephants have grown up orphans due to ivory hunters or culling activities. It is now believed that these elephants suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, just as humans do. What we do to animals is heartbreaking.

41. I agree. Many elephants have died in captivity.
A number of zoos have had that problem because the elephants have to stand endlessly on concrete.
They get infections that they can't seem to recover from.
And then they die.

It is an outrageous and avoidable tragedy.

:(
