I have long posted that Iraq is nothing more than the imperialistic creation of the British after WWI and that trying to "save" a "nation" that never was is an impossible proposition without, that is, a cruel dictator running the "nation".
Letting this phony "nation" called Iraq break up and to be governed and policed by its own ethnic and religious components is not really a choice for the U.S. to make...in fact, it is happening already.
I think the problem that many here have with this concept, is that neo-cons have also championed this. But it isn't a neo-con idea. It's the reality of the area.
Millions of Iraqis have already left the country since our illegal invasion. Millions more are now dead. Millions more are moving into neighborhoods where they feel safe. The "nation" is already breaking up.
It is not for the U.S. to "divide" Iraq, but it is going to happen. Iraq, the "nation" will never exist as it was under Saddam and former British puppets.
To prevent full scale civil war that will make the current situation look tame, a very loose federation is the only solution which will save lives and allow our troops to leave.
This will require the input of the Arab Sunnis, the Arab Shi'a, the Kurds along with Syria, Jordan, Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia and many more in the region...and the U.S. must not play any role in the process.
The problem that I keep seeing here at the DU is that many here still believe that there is such a thing as "Iraq". There isn't and there never was.
