Congress gave Bush and Rangel a victory today on the trade deal.
This is from David Sirota's email. He has been on top of this. Apparently it slipped through today.

Rangel D-NY noted that he may not be able to win over most of his party

"A trade pact between the United States and Peru won bipartisan support in a crucial Congressional committee Tuesday...The vote Tuesday was a victory for the Bush administration and Representative Charles B. Rangel, the New York Democrat who is chairman of the Ways and Means panel. Mr. Rangel argued, against the opposition of many Democrats...Committee Chair Charles Rangel (D-NY)] noted that he may not be able to win over most of his party, adding, 'Our membership on this committee means that we will have to do things that at times will not be as popular as we would like them to be.'

Democrats regained control of Congress last year after a campaign in which many candidates promised to block future trade deals...While many rank-and-file Democrats fear that trade deals erode American jobs, Democratic leaders have developed close ties with Wall Street and with many high technology and industrial companies...

Critics of the deal say that it represents an extension of Nafta

Rangel said he would do that. That he would push it through and then just catch hell. What an attitude.

Rangel..."bam, seal it and catch hell" ...about the trade deal

"Every time we had them all together, someone jumped off," Rangel told reporters after the meeting, referring to that group. "So we said, we can't wait for the Caucus. When we got everybody holding hands, bam! Seal it and catch hell. We did both." The fact that Rangel now admits the Chamber of Commerce was so intimately involved in the negotiations may explain why the Chamber continues to say it has received "assurances" that the much-touted labor provisions in the deal will be rendered unenforceable.

6. Not that they have now been bought by corporations.
Memory is a funny thing when someone else owns you.

5. Well, umm..
When haven't the Dems given Bush and the corporofascists
a "victory"?

Of course, none of those victories are good for anybody or
anything.

7. Rangel is not labor's friend. I've never seen him fight against any trade deal.

Rangel is the embodiment of a limousine liberal.

8. Doesn't sound like he is.
He'd rather get what he wants and then let us yell about it.
