Its my duty to award my first ever "Uncle Tom(s) of the Week" award to Joe Watkins and Juan Williams
As a Black man I try to use the the term "Uncle Tom" as little as possible because I think it should be reserved for the most appalling examples of African Americans who sell the race out. Now let me state on the outset, for purposes of this award the "Uncle Tom of the Week" only applies to an individual's conduct on any given manner and that person should not be considered an outright "Uncle Tom."

So its with a heavy heart that I present to you wndycty's first ever "Uncle Tom(s) of the Week" to Juan Williams of NPR and FOX News; and MSNBC Analyst Joe Watkins.

First let me state that Willams DID NOT earn this honor because of his employment with FOX NEWS and that Watkins DID NOT earn this honor because he is a GOP operative. While I would never work for FOX NEWS or the GOP I sincerely do not believe that being associated with either FOX NEWS or the GOP should earn someone the title of "Uncle Tom of the Week."

Both earn the title of "Uncle Tom of the Week" for their idiotic support of Bill O'Reilly this week. Williams because he never once, ONCE asked O'Reilly why he was surprised there is no difference between Black owned and operated establishments and white owned and operated establishments.

Watkins because he joined O'Reilly in blaming the messenger, Media Matters, this morning during appearances on THE TODAY SHOW and MSNBC. Also, he advanced the notion that O'Reilly was making the argument that there are not differences between us. While it can be spun that way that is not really the issue.

What both Williams and Watkins don't get is that Bill O'Reilly is a 59 year old, allegedly well educated, seasoned journalist. It is appalling that in the year 2007 it took a trip to a Harlem restaurant with Al Sharpton to open his eyes to the fact that Black owned businesses are just like white owned business and that Black people don't scream "M-Fer I want more iced tea."

Additionally, O'Reilly's arrogance is what is doing him in on this matter. Not once, ONCE has O'Reilly defended himself by acknowledging that he understands why,WHY African Americans or anyone else for that matter would find his comments offensive. A little contrition and acknowledgment of his mistake could rapidly douse this controversy, by him swinging back at the messenger he just digs himself a deeper hole.

There are so many things wrong with O'Reilly's comments its ridiculous and he needs to be called on them,
but with the help of "Uncle Toms of the Week" Williams and Watkins O'Reilly can continue to be in denial about his racist attitudes.

2. Well done!
I posted this a few minutes before you did. I have to admit, I actually edited "Uncle Tom" out of the sub line because, as a white guy, I didn't want even that to be taken "the wrong way." But I'm glad to see that a fellow human being agrees with me!

4. touche, wndycty
I found myself cussing at the TV when I heard Joe defend O'Lielly this morning. Smarmy bastard.

Good for MediaMatters and boo hiss to sellout Uncle Toms like Juan and Joe.

BTW, Juan is a Tom for a host of reasons including working for FAUX

5. Juan gave us "Eyes on the Prize" which in my mind makes him immune. . .
. . .from permanent Uncle Tomdon, also he does fight for left on FOX Sunday morning.

13. former good works
and indeed, Eyes on the Prize is a gem, don't make him immune from devolving.

I say that for personal reasons -- long roots in DC, knowing many of the same people/circle.

6. Don't you see? All O'Reilly cares about is the attention. He IS defending himself—
by introducing Media Matters into the situation. This serves to prolong the controversy—apologies and dialogue would end it—that keeps things all about him. He's not digging himself a deeper hole, from his point of view, he's Center Stage, and that's what drives him.

He should be in the Uncle Tom Hall of Infamy by now. Every time that guy opens his mouth, I shake my head.

11. Now you've made me feel bad for dissing Joe Watkins
In my post above, I called Watkins "Cross-Eyed Joe." I was, of course, mistaken. Watkins is "Lispin' Joe." It's Ron Christie who is cross-eyed. Not that it matters...but I have to keep my Uncle Toms straight.

22. Does Condi Count As Black? Don't Forget Armstrong Williams
I find it so absurd that BillO is going the same route Imus did in trying to prove he's no a racist...running to Reverend Al. It's as though no one would note the irony? It just points out how really racist these goons are...thinking that Al or Jesse Jackson are the "king of the blacks" and kissing their rings will make all their racist problems go away. It does the opposite.

It's gotta be tough being a regime spinner and either a black or latino these days. A couple years ago, this was a ticket to a nice gig/paycheck and social climb. It got you on TV shows and invites to the drinkie-drinkie parties. I just wonder how these people deal with their own families and history and how they can sleep at night.

Cheers...

29. The Ice Tea Issue
I guess one of the things that gets me is the ice tea issue. Where in the world did he get that idea and how in the world could he be stupid enough to believe that idea. I would think just common sense would make him realize black people in black owned businesses do not say things like "M-fer I want more ice tea". I know he has gone to businesses where black people have been. What, was he thinking the black people were behaving because they thought the white people would get angry if they behaved poorly. So, I think his comments show that he was not the clueless man he is pretending to be. I think to be his age and think what he thought there has to be some form of racism. I just do not think anyone could think what he thought for as long as he did without having negative bias toward a race.
