drought in Australia causing water emergencies - bad news

A water emergency has been declared for the Clyde River in Tasmania's Central Highlands, with Minister for Primary Industry David Llewellyn authorising the release of water for town and farm needs. Mr Llewellyn has used his authority under the state's Water Act to order the release of water to supply the town of Bothwell and provide stock and domestic water to properties. The region has experienced a record dry spell and the Clyde River is now subject to a management plan, which aims to protect threatened fish species. Farmers on the river have no irrigation allocation this season, and have launched legal action against the management plan. Central Highlands Mayor Deidre Flint says today's decision is a relief. "And they are very frightened that they're not going to have any water during the summer and also the problem is there's no water for stock or for domestic use because some of the people along the river, that's their only means of water, and also firefighting, which could be a very dangerous season," she said.
