SOLDIERS fired on crowds of protesters in Rangoon yesterday in an attempt to end the biggest people-power marches in Burma in 20 years.

At least three monks were killed, an official told Agence France-Presse on condition of anonymity. One was killed when a gun went off as he tried to wrest the weapon away from a soldier, while two were beaten to death, the official said.

His account was confirmed by a second official, who said the toll was based on official reports of incidents that took place around the Shwedagon Pagoda, Burma's holiest site and a key rallying point for the monks.

6. I'm all for full-scale insurrection.
If they're not going to respect peaceful protests, then the government needs to be taken out.

Than Shwe, the dictator of Myanmar, should be hung upside down from a meathook like Mussolini.

21. Myanmar? HA! It's motherfucking BURMA.
Calling it Myanmar legitimizes the military government.

Shwe's time is limited...this protest is huge.

8. Thought this was the way
it would inevitably go. the army has been brutalized too long to back down before the social taboo against harming monks. it also means they are totally beyond the human pale. Full scale insurrection and bloodily taking down the military is as inevitable as the will of the leaders. As in Romania, the armed forces have to break down on side of the dictator's murderous fanatics and whatever scraps of weapons and soldiers the commons can muster.

Without UN intervention this will likely escalate. Not 100% sure but very likely. The first actual disaffected army units would guarantee it. I don't know the relative power or control of the military forces or any rivalries or uncorrupted soldiers and officers. Otherwise I would be completely sure. The powers that be simply won't discuss things like that for obvious reasons impinging on their own personal power.

10. That Govt. is as brutal as it is stupid!
If they ignored the protest they would have been better off. Instead they escalate the Resistance.

monks be the catalyst that brings freedom to the people of Myanmar/Burma.

RIP Monks. May your memories be for a blessing

zichranon livracha.

Bush and his enablers in the media and legislative branch of government may be bad, but we don't endure anything near what the Burmese people endure.

http://jurist.law.pitt.edu/paperchase/2007/09/myanmar-police-fire-on-anti-government.php

JURIST] Violence erupted in Myanmar Wednesday as police opened fire on a crowd of 10,000 demonstrators, leaving as many as eight dead. Up to 300 protesters were arrested in the fray, including many Buddhist monks. The violence broke out just one day after the nation's military government banned public gatherings of more than five people and imposed a curfew in response to the anti-government protests . The government acknowledged via state media that the "minimum force" employed by police caused one death; it was the first official admission of the use of force against government protesters. In response to the violence, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon dispatched his Special Envoy to Myanmar and urged peaceful dialogue with the junta leaders. The United States and the European Union issued a joint statement calling for an end to the violence and looking to "China, India, ASEAN and others in the region to use their influence in support of the people of Burma/Myanmar." AP has more.

15. This is an awful situation
If ever there was a time for a superpower to get of their collective asses and do some good in the world, this is that time. Bush is talking tough - let's see if he can actually use the power of the US for good - try to make up a little for being a mass-killer. This would require putting heavy pressure on China as they hold the economic key that keeps the military rulers in power. I expect nothing from the fools who could do something about this :( Hopefully the will of the monks will win the day, but I am not so sure there will be a good outcome based on past history with this murderous government.

16. Monks to Protesters: "Don't do anything violent-we will send loving kindness to them".

....That group of monks urged their supporters to stand back. "We monks will do this, please don't join us," they told the crowd. "Don't do anything violent. We will send loving kindness to them," they said of the military presence......

Wow.....we need monks here when the shit has finally gotten so bad....

Namaste

17. Oh man...who ever killed those Buddhist monks are gonna HATE their next incarnation.
Very bad Karma for MANY lifetimes.

Those monks are brave - their beliefs are being challenged to the core and they are standing firm.

Peace be with them.

18. Peace and courage to our brothers and sisters in Burma.
"YANGON (Reuters) - Myanmar's ruling generals admitted on Thursday one protester was killed and three were wounded in a harsh crackdown on anti-government protests in Yangon.

Protest leaders said at least five monks were killed.

State-owned media said two police officers were also wounded in Wednesday's crackdown on protesters who defied warning shots, tear gas and baton charges meant to quell the biggest anti-junta protests in 20 years.

Protest leaders speaking on the Myanmar-language services of foreign broadcasters said at least five monks were killed and they urged the monks to continue their marches."

We all, as a one of people will courageously refuse all the unlawful orders by the military regime. Therefore we will stand firm with patriotic spirit. All the people will come out to the street like the other days. I would like to request all other people to collaborate with us.
