What a great bunch of critical thinkers we get as college freshmen, you know, the ones who think Canada is an island and Britain not. Who do not discern the very real differences between "their", "there" and "they're." Kids who believe a formal academic essay is perfectly acceptable with an opening of "I think..."
I don't know how many times I have written "This is not a sentence." or "There is no subject in the sentence." or even better, "A peasant is an agricultural laborer, a pheasant is a game bird." Or my favorite of all times, "Karl Marx was neither a revolutionary nor a Russian. The Soviet Union/Russian Empire was an ally of France and the UK and the US in the First World War and again in the Second."
