Those were the days. Back then the "No Sex Threads" sticky waved like a banner across the top of the forum. We all viewed it as a talisman to our brilliant (read: drunken) posting abilities. :rofl: I think flame wars were almost as common in the Lounge then as in GD. We were crabby and it was even filtering into the sacred forum that is the DU Lounge. :scared:

Author's note: This was before the force that is California Peggy swept into the Lounge. If ever there was an antithesis of crabby it is she.

that it is cliquish. Watch carefully when someone new posts something in the lounge and see how many responses they get.

People don't necessarily expect to find friends in GD but the lounge has an atmosphere of friendliness that "outsiders" see and feel left out of.

21. In the early days, GD was serious and The Lounge was just slightly less so.

Nowadays, GD is a free-for-all and The Lounge is - generally speaking (but not always) - a bandwidth-wasting, puerile, scatological joke. The GD forum is nowhere near as serious as it was in 2001, for example. However, my hat is off to the Mods .. they do manage to keep the fences from being trampled.

If my mother dies tomorrow, I'll probably post it on GD. Time was when that kind of post was appropriate to The Lounge. The Lounge is too rowdy now, and that is not necessarily bad. DU needs a high-pressure safety valve (set at about 220 PSI .. the tire pressure of a Boeing 737, BTW!), and it seems to be The Lounge. But, like the old Holiday Inn bars, we do have a fair share of lounge lizards.

We were in Atlanta a few years ago.

Staying at the Westin, downtown.

My Mother stopped by on her way to Keeneland to buy some racing stock.

And she decided that we would go to the Sundial and have some drinks. The Sundial is a revolving restaurant on the 73rd floor of the Westin, the tallest restaurant in the Western Hemisphere.

Mom had her regular entourage, maybe 8 or 9 trainers, hangers-on and such. I hadn't seen her in maybe a year.

This place has a dedicated elevator and a hostess at a podium at the foot of the elevator.

Hostess asked us if we had reservations. I told her that we were just going to have some drinks.

Said it would be 5 bucks apiece.

Mom was appalled. I mean, we were talking about 40-50 bucks, here.

Explained to Mom that charge was to keep people from going up and taking space while nursing a cheap beer for an hour.

Mom told her that we were not cheap drinkers, we would probably outspend any ten-top table in the restaurant that night (single-malts and all, you know).

Hostess points to me and asks me how old I was.

I told her.

So she said I am eligible for the Seniors Discount.

Everybody cracked up (I had hair past my shoulder-blades at the time).

Mom (hanging on my arm) said, "What about me? I am his Mother".

Hostess (fully pissed at Mom by this point), "Lady, just because you are the date of a Senior doesn't qualify you for a Senior's discount".

Carded her.

My Mother was 74 at the time.

But, to be honest, I found the same thing mentioned by some of the other people on here. It felt like there were a lot inside jokes and it seemed a little hard to 'break into'. Over here, if you want to get some response to your post all you have to do is say "Hillary" or "Fuck smokers" and you can have a 200 post thread (and make the greatest page).

In the Lounge peoples' mean-spiritedness has a sinister, lurking quality.

It is not a friendly place. At least the hostility in GD is normal and expected.

160. Have you seen

all the disparaging remarks people there make about GD posters? It's kind of this whole high school (self-proclaimed) cool kids table thing they've got going there. It's actually pretty amusing. They consider GD poster as the unwashed masses.

Having said that, I'll still post in there -- largely unnoticed of course, but, post I do.
