To those that espouse the nobility of the American Spirit
Many of you have already read about the Milgram experiments, but it bears refreshing imo. For those of you that haven't, this study was replicated countless times, and its veracity is as established as nearly any aspect of science.

We are all capable of horrible things. Beware this idea that we are somehow better equipped to resist evil as a people. Please read

I set up a simple experiment at Yale University to test how much pain an ordinary citizen would inflict on another person simply because he was ordered to by an experimental scientist. Stark authority was pitted against the subjects' strongest moral imperatives against hurting others, and, with the subjects' ears ringing with the screams of the victims, authority won more often than not. The extreme willingness of adults to go to almost any lengths on the command of an authority constitutes the chief finding of the study...

2. The government does... dems and repubs alike
Remember that Clinton escalated the so-called 'War on Drugs', he did not disband it. As a result, millions of non-violent offenders had their lives ruined.
