Gore "won't endorse Hillary?" Hmmm....
Last week on K.O. a guest (can't remember which one, I think it was the frequent guest from Newseek) stated that Gore has said he will not endorse Hillary.

I thought that seemed a little odd... I mean if Hillary gets the nomination, where would that leave him - no endorsement at all? Assuming Gore is not running himself, it's hard for me to envision a bitter battle in the general election and Gore just kicking back watching it all unfold with his mouth sealed.

It sort of raised my wishful thinking that it was another tiny indicator that he is not satisfied with the current choices, and he just might be considering a run himself.

Why would he say that he won't endorse the candidate who is at this point most likely to get the nomination, unless perhaps he anticipates running against her in the primary?

1. I assume it means pre-nomination endorsement.

12. I'm sure that's what he meant. I won't vote for Hillary in the primary,
but will vote for the nominee in the general election.

3. That's odd. Especially since Hillary helped him so much in 2000.

4. If Clinton is the nominee
I expect Gore will not only endorse her, but help campaign for her.

5. invision this
gore lets the primaries slip by then he announces his candidacy for a third party ticket, gore wins and we are forever off of the two party system......wow what a concept.

28. Yes, but a campaign needs "boots on the ground"

with connections to the community, and that means a political party structure.

I love the netroots. You know how truly creative times and movements are often associated with a city, and to be in such a city during such a time and connected to such a movement is a special thing (examples: San Francisco, 1960s, Seattle, 1990s)? I think the netroots are our first virtual creative movement, and places like DU and Kos and the like are our city-equivalents. I've had the opportunity, in 50 years, to have, on more than one occasion, been a part of trends and movements in their early formative stages (sometimes I joke that I must have been the model for Forrest Gump). There's a very special feeling to something important coming into being, a very special creative, innovative, energy. I see that energy here, in the netroots. We're making something special happen.

But to herd us together, community and neighborhood by community and neighborhood, and organize us well enough to bang on doors and make phone calls and the like to our real-world neighbors to make sure they get to their real-world polling places (driving them if necessary)... well I'm sure the netroots would do everything that was asked of us, but it would take time to build such a ground organization ex nihilo.

Al Gore is smart enough to know that, and wouldn't try to run without a party organization in place on the ground. Furthermore, I think he's as loyal a Democrat as they come. For better or worse, in 2008 our electable options are the Democratic Party, and, in a few local races in at most a handful of states, a few electable independents and third party candidates.

7. A wise politician doesn't necessarily endorse somebody in the Primary
That way they don't look foolish if their candidate doesn't win the primary. If Al runs, or doesn't run, I'm sure that he will endorse whoever is the democratic candidate. Just like the Dem Senators endorsed Ned Lamont in Connecticut because he was the dem candidate.

18. Well, if he does that
then it will be reluctantly, like most of us who aren't for Bullery Clinton! ..Face it, Gore knows all about the dark side of the Clintons or maybe just Hill and he probably secretly pukes at the idea. He knows all about the corporate crap she has her hands stuck into.

Its a good reason for having more than one link to validate one's claim.

17. Gore endorsed Dean in 03 and that was beginning of the end for Dean
Edited on Mon Oct-15-07 04:17 PM by mnhtnbb
It caused all the rest of the candidates--especially Gephardt, Kerry, and Edwards to get together (with Pelosi's help) to sandbag Dean.

26. I was a huge Deaniac. Take a look...
Gore endorsed Dean Dec 9 2003 http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/12/09/elec04.prez.gore.dean/

and before long attack ads were being run by a shadowy organization which turned out to be funded
primarily by Gephardt and Kerry supporters.

http://www.counterpunch.org/lewis03062004.html

Meantime, Gephardt, Kerry, and Edwards were taking regular potshots at Dean.

21. Can you imagine how the major candidates
are rubbing their hands together and licking their lips just to have the Goracle utter those words of endorsement? Like it or not Gore has substantial political weight in this campaign.

and it probably means he will not endorse anybody until it's clear who the nominee will be.
