Some Monday dinnertime wisdom from Noam Chomsky:

"These sectors of the doctrinal system serve to divert the unwashed masses and reinforce basic social values: passivity, submissiveness to authority, the overriding virtue of greed and personal gain, lack of concern for others, fear of real or imagined enemies, etc. The goal is to keep the bewildered herd bewildered."

1. "gain wealth forgetting all but self"
What was called the new spirit of the age....in the late 1800's.

Clearly, the massive propaganda campaign has worked. We are the ideal: atoms of consumption.

Without having read Chomsky you forfeit any claim to understanding how power works.

2. Reminds me of Durant's quote from 1935
"Hence the state . . . used and forged many instruments of indoctrination -- the family, the church, the school -- to build in the soul of the citizen a habit of patriotic loyalty and pride."

3. And still another-
"Either you repeat the same conventional doctrines everybody is saying, or else you say something true, and it will sound like it's from Neptune."

6. I would suggest spending some time on Youtube.
Look for these:

Free Market Fantasies

Propaganda and Control of the Public Mind

That should be a good start.

Here is another quote:
"The people who were honored in the Bible were the false prophets. It was the ones we call the prophets who were jailed and driven into the desert."

Here is something that was said as Chomsky was introduced at one of his talks-

"He will not be bullied; he will not be intimidated. He is a fearless, formidable, totally independent voice. He does something which is really quite simple, but highly unusual: he tells the truth."

8. Will do. I got my new library card today (just moved) and took out 2 books:
Imperial nation and Failed states. Turned off the idiot box and put on some music and will curl up with Noam.

Thanks!
