Let's Go to the Video: When and Where Did Hillary Tape 'I'm In' Announcement?

If the timing came as a bit of surprise, nothing could have been less unexpected than Hillary's "I'm In" announcement of today.

But have a look at the video of her announcement. Rather than her "let's chat" rap, please focus on the background. Look out the door. Presumably the announcement was shot in one of Hillary's homes: Chappaqua or Georgetown. Now I know it's been a mild winter, but even so, surely the leaves are gone from the trees and bushes in either spot. And check out the yellow spot in the bushes. At first I thought it was just a warm dapple of sunshine. But freeze the frame when, about 1/4 of the way through, Hillary says "how to end the deficits that threaten Social Security." That's not sunshine -- those are flowers in bloom.

The announcement is essentially content-free. All Hillary talks about is having a conversation. Not only is it devoid of any solutions, it notably fails to make reference to any specific current events. If this had been taped in the last couple days, could Hillary have resisted referring to her just-completed trip to Iraq? True, she does mention starting conversations "Monday," but it could have always been the plan to roll out the announcement over a weekend.
So, what's the story? Did Hillary have this video in the can during all those months while she was claiming to be making up her mind? Was it a carefully staged artificial background? Minor points in the great scheme of things, but perhaps interesting for us political junkie types.

Wouldn't you love to see a reporter put the question to Hillary and see how she answers?

UPDATE: A national-level reporter whom I respect informs me that the video was
produced last week in DC. The reporter does not know whether the
background is natural.

Update 12:32: Rush Limbaugh and Fox & Friends have had some fun with the issue. On Fox & Friends this morning, host Steve Doocy, noting the preternaturally green background, surmised the video had been shot back in October or November. Guest Juan Williams told him the word is it was done last Thursday in DC. When Juan later joked about going skiing, host Brian Kilmeade chipped in: "judging by the background of the Hillary Clinton clip, it's not -- it's too nice, there's no snow."

Rush opened his show today by also noting the oddly verdant background and wondering whether it was a TV set.

Transcript of the FNC segment follows:

Co-host Steve Doocy: "And Juan, as we look at that picture, you can see in one of the wide shots, the background, there's a lot of green foliage. You know, throughout the Northeast, if that was shot in Chappaqua, all the leaves have been gone in Chappaqua for the last two and a half, three months. So obviously she taped this thing in October or early November, and she's just been waiting."

NPR's Juan Williams: "No, I think they did it Thursday of last week in D.C."

Doocy: "Is that right?"

Williams: "At her D.C. house, which is actually near rock creek park for those of you who know it. So that's, that's a little bit of the green foliage in the background."

2 days ago, it was pretty warm here with the sun shining. The winter wasn't cold till now, there was no snow, so it's also still quite green outside. Around a week ago, a DUer talked about blooming flowers on his balcony.

And even if it was videotaped earlier, we all know that Hillary played with the idea of running and it's clear that every candidate waits for the right day to announce. I'd say most candidates have made up their mind whether they are running or not long before they announce and no one would admit it before the day they announce.

And I agree with those who mention how absurd it is to waste any thought about this issue the day the US lost 27 men and women in Iraq. Doesn't that make us a sick society?

Rhododendrons, as you point out, and azaleas, abelias, camellias, gardenias, ligustrums, spiraeas, and others. The point of having plants like these is that they flower, and also provide green foliage in the winter. Landscapers use them a lot, because they stay attractive all year. was intentionally dressed up for the video. I used to develop properties, and sometimes we'd have to photograph them when the weather wasn't cooperating. It's amazing how a few well-placed silk plants and flowers can make a dreary landscape look lush.

Plus, consider the psychological factor of the video: dark, barren, dead or dormant landscaping in the background does not express the vitality of the message. Lush, green, growing things do. If I were responsible for the production of that video, I would have made sure the background was subconsciously sending a message as well.
