A month ago, congressional Republicans were so desperate to avoid discussing the substance of U.S. policy towards Iraq, they decided a newspaper ad from MoveOn.org was the single biggest threat to Western Civilization in recent history. The coordinated hissy fit was a transparent effort to distract attention from the issue at hand, but it was also a largely successful sham — Republicans stopped talking about Bush’s failed policy and started talking about the NYT’s ad rates.

This month, those same congressional Republicans are so desperate to avoid discussing the substance of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (S-CHIP), they’ve decided Rep. Pete Stark (D-Calif.) has replaced MoveOn as Public Enemy #1. (For reasons that defy logic, CNN has decided that the GOP’s feigned outrage is a .)

In other words, by throwing a fit, Republicans end up looking weak and hysterical. Indeed, it reinforces the least flattering GOP caricature of all — these guys can’t govern, but they can fall onto a fainting couch like nobody’s business.

For their part, Republicans, as part of the drive to perfect the art of the tantrum, are planning to — you guessed it — introduce a resolution condemning Stark for his remarks. It’d be amusing if it weren’t so ridiculous.

Rep. King’s new name for SCHIP.

Today on the House floor, Rep. Steve King (R-IA) introduced a new name for the acronym SCHIP — “Socialized Clinton-style Hillarycare for Illegals and their Parents”:



For the record, SCHIP stands for the “State Children’s Health Insurance Program” and does not cover undocumented immigrants. Not surprisingly, King voted today to sustain Bush’s SCHIP veto.

UPDATE: Earlier this week, Rep. Tom Feeney (R-FL) told USA Today that he refers to SCHIP as “Socialized, Cuba-style Health care for Illegals and their Parents.”

7. The dynamic is fascinating.

(1) The GOP Corporatist Wurlitzer spins attacks against Hillary, casting a faux 'liberalism' characterization.
(2) The partisan Democrats react by defending "one of their own" and, in the process, fail to correct the mischaracterization of her positions as being liberal.
(3) That defensive posture morphs into 'support' while the policy positions don't get examined.
(4) When issue-focused liberals point to those positions and criticize them as conservative the defensive antibodies, attuned to the kabuki of the GOP Reich, eat their own.


As an anti-partisan, independent liberal, I'm reminded of the Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight.
