Webb is in Arlington, VA at the end of the campaign. He's holding two combat boots in his

62. Yeah it's called "socialism".
I'm a liberal. I believe in free markets and I believe that the government has the responsibility to enact a safety net for those hurt by the market.

They should not, however, be "protecting" jobs or setting prices or interfering in the free market that is responsible for economic growth.

I am a college student. I come from a working class family with a single mom and deadbeat dad. I am not wealthy by any means although I certainly understand that there are those who are less fortunate than I am. They are not helped by destroying the market and restricting the freedom of people to trade and do business.

In a free market, the government wouldn't be giving huge retroactive tax breaks to oil corps. Or billions in free advertising and marketing thru the Dept of Commerce to big corps like Dole Foods, or ConAgra, or IBM, or whoever. Or huge tax breaks to corps for MOVING THEIR MANUFACTURING JOBS OVERSEAS. Get a clue. We don't have a free market.

85. I'm glad the Democratic Congress removed the oil company tax breaks.
I don't like the fact that they put it into subsidies for other forms of energy. The market should determine which forms of energy are profitable. IF the government wants to tax carbon emissions I'm down with that but I think trying to pick winners in the renewable energy insdustry is almost as bad as sucking up to the oil industry.

(Actually it's not almost as bad...the oil companies are little bit more evil than that :P.)

76. It isn't about socialism. It's about fair trading arrangements
Currently Pig Vomit Inc sets up shop in China and moves a US factory there.

There is no minimum wage, no OSHA standards for safety and no environmental regulations.

Pig Vomit, Inc pays the Chinese workers 5 bucks per day and then sells the goods in the best markets available, the US and Western Europe while fucking over the workers in China by piss poor safety on the job and no environmental safeguards.

Simultaneously, they fuck over the US and European workers by moving the jobs offshore as fast as their greedy asses can manage it.

Pig Vomit, Inc. should have to observe US/European environmental and worker safety standards or not be allowed to sell their goods in the US and Europe.

Pig Vomit, Inc doesn't care if the American middle class survives or not. It just wants to add an additional 12 cents per share profit next quarter, so the CEO can get his million dollar bonus for the quarter.

If Pig Vomit, Inc is allowed to continue this trend continues, the US will be a third world country with a big military in short order.

166. I have a BA in Economics. I believe in regulated free markets
You have to limit the size and market share of corporations, otherwise they will collude to maximize profits, just like supply and demand theory say they will. They will also bribe public officials when they get wealthy enough to dominate the countries they operate in, complicating the monopoly problem with crony capitalism problems.

That is where the regulation comes in.

and are far more prone to public and legal acceptance due to them being percieved as less of a threat compared to monopolies.

I'd be keen to see just how they would handle such a regulation of industry. Whether it would be the same across the board, work within borders created by industrial standards, or if they would create different rules/laws on a case-by-case basis...

80. Wake up....your college is not teaching you what
you need to learn. The 'free market' (capitalism) is gone. We are ruled by Corporations who demand NO competition. NONE.

Wonder why we have don't national health care? If we did, folks could become entrepreneurs...they could create and start businesses on their own. They could leave the Corporate Bureaucracy. But they can't....not without taking the huge risk of NO health insurance for themselves and their family.

Of course, the Corporations encourage this....they want people to be stuck...stuck working for them. Stuck working in fear.

We don't have a free market....very far from it. There is no competition. We have conglomerates that squash competition. These conglomerates encourage lots of bureaucracy for the small business owner....making it more and more difficult to compete with the Corporation.

Corporations are killing us....they are the root of the problem.

I don't love my job. It's OK, but not great. I would like to look around and to try to find something I would like better. "Experts" predict that 2007 will see a record number of job offers. So now would appear to be a good time to start looking for a new job. Except that I don't dare to leave my job. I can't afford to take the risk.

My wife is very ill. Stage 4 melanoma. She has already outlived the statistical life expectancy for her diagnosis, and I hope she continues to do so. I have very good insurance through my job. Without it, we would be bankrupt and homeless. Or else, she would have had to forgo treatments which probably are keeping her alive.

Now I know that HIPPA says that her coverage cannot be denied for preexisting conditions if I can show that she has been covered for the previous 12 months, (Thank you President Clinton). But with any new job, there is always a risk that it won't work out. Maybe the job isn't quite what I expected it to be. Maybe my skills aren't really what the new company needs. Maybe the new boss is a psychopath. Then I'm out of a job and faced with the choice of going without health insurance, (not an option), or paying out of pocket for COBRA, (not affordable). Neither option is realistic for me and my wife. So I'm stuck in a job that I don't love because Corporate America likes it that way.

113. Free trade works among countries of similar wealth and political
structure. Each may have an advantage with respect to some element of production, but no country has an absolute advantage on all counts.

A poor authoritarian country like China has an absolute advantage over the U.S. in manufacturing in its extremely low wages, unbelievably slave-like working conditions and complete lack of enforcement of any environmental laws.

To my recollection none of the early promoters of the theory of comparative advantage contemplated a situation in which one country had an absolute advantage.

I do not know of any example of the C.A. theory working to the betterment of working stiffs in a developed country when it is in a "free trade" relationship with a poor country with China-like conditions.

Obviously, your profs aren't talking about this. You're young. You'll see how badly this will work out for at least 40% of the U.S. workforce in your lifetime. I hope that you'll see things differently when you have more experience in life.

P.S. I'm from the working class and I can see how "free trade" is affecting folks in my home are of the country. Not everyone is college material or white collar material. Unless there are respectable places in society for the others, there will be a lot, and I mean a lot, of trouble in the future of the type that economists can't seem to quantify and thus disregard.

There is NO goddamned free market. There is only corporations and the serfs (that would be YOU, dear chicken for Colonel Sanders) they keep well pinned under their boot heels.

"You're either free trade or for protectionism, it's just that simple!" is so painfully black and white it's sickening. Take that neo-lib shit elsewhere. Unbridled corporatism is racing EVERY middle class; American, Indian, Asian, European, etc to the bottom of the well. Read Thomas Hartmann and Byron Dorgan for the reality of what you would call an ideal world.

165. Richard Nixon did a LOT of price-setting
He imposed stiff wage and price controls during his second term. Nobody could get a raise (unless, of course, they were a CEO)for years.

Was he a Socialist?

There is nothing Socialistic about insisting that American businesses that accept and solicit huge tax breaks -- including breaks on local property taxes -- return the favor by not shipping good jobs overseas. OK, sure, they're free to leave -- but then they should reimburse us taxpayers for all the "welfare" they've sucked out of us.

My hard-earned tax dollars should not be handed out as welfare to corporations that ship jobs overseas or import foreign workers on H1B and similar visas to take away jobs from Americans.

Case in point: Fannie Mae, the mortgage giant, does not pay one cent of property taxes in Washington DC. I'm sure it enjoys all sorts of other tax breaks. It is not a part of the federal government -- it is a quasi-federal organization with stockholders, etc.

So why should Fannie be allowed to replace nearly all its computer people with cheap labor from India, leaving numerous Americans out of work, on our dime?

183. The free market is a total myth.
The stock exchange is totally regulated, and tends to fail dramatically when unregulated. Look at history. A "free market" would not have strong monopolies. Look at patents, they are totally against the concept of free market. The truth is that a corporation that can ignore consequence and maintain its perks is what is being called a free market. Companies seeking to be unrestrained by environmental issue, ethical business practice, and community regulations, generally call for free markets.
The same corporations that desire "free markets" are also against clear and honest labeling. They tend to argue that consumer ignorance is what causes low quality, while desiring no consequences when the deceive investors and customers. Where does not letting the consumer know that a product is the result of genetic manipulation, untested or tested beef, organic or fair trade values. "Free Market Values" tend to reward producers over end consumers. A functional market must reward both. This require regulation. Other wise low production values are unfairly rewarded and the final result is low grade goods. "Free Market" and faith in the market are in direct opposition.

Of course you would rather have no laws restricting you and all of the protection of the law. What a wonderful world that would be. Solves all the legal problems, it even reduces crime. While allowing criminal behavior on your part.

Free Market and blame the victim mentality go hand in hand.

I don't mean to be offensive, I simply want to get past the double-speak deceit. Anyone calling for a "free" market is either participating in a scam or fooled by that scam. Over regulation is a horrid thing, it can kill and limit progress and commerce. However the opposite is just as bad. History has shown this over and over.

There are few simple answers in economics. Free trade and free markets seem like a simple answer. A magic bullet, a cure for all financial ills. The problem is that it is also a myth. A myth that is quite beloved by people who have already won the game.

What I hope you will dig into is how the game is fixed, and not really a "free" market at all. It's a scam, but the words sound great.

We live in Orewellian times.

Look how CODEX is destroying the "free"market you talk about. It's all about coporate control of markets w/o regulatory obstacles. Safety and environment screwed. Smaller producers screwed because they're left in the ditch.

Study this. Make this your area of expertise.

That large middle classes are un-natural and require government regulation in order to appear.

Edited on Wed Jan-24-07 11:42 AM by Flarney
Germany, Japan, China...in fact most of the people we trade with ("buy from" would be more appropriate) practice Protectionism. In the last 30 years of our insane "free market" trade policies, we've gone from the worlds largest creditor and largest importer of raw materials/exporter of finished goods to the opposite of that. We're now the worlds largest debtor and importer of finished goods/exporter of raw materials. It's all because we don't protect our domestic industries like our trading partners do. How long do you think we can sustain a trade deficit of 800 billion every year?

Allen’s Deferment: Why Join the Military When You Can Play Combat in Virginia?
http://www.webbforsenate.com/press/release.php?id=147
(Arlington, VA)—At the beginning of this year’s Virginia Senate race, Senator George Allen “promised a positive campaign, based on both the principles he has stressed and his proven record of performance.” That was a lie. Today, Allen released the first negative television ad of this campaign against Jim Webb, and has plans for many more. Enter the “Real George Allen.”

As a Virginia columnist wrote recently, “nasty combat” is “the stuff that delights Allen and at which, frankly, he excels.” There is no doubt this election cycle is no exception. With White House strategist Karl Rove planning negative campaign strategies in Virginia, Senator Allen recently defended his buddy saying he admires Rove “a great deal,” and that Rove “is a good friend.”

George Allen has even “whimsically” referred to himself as “Baby Newt,” a reference to former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, renowned for his negative, cutthroat political tactics.

“George Allen has a clear history as the most negative political candidate in Virginia history. We expect him to cement that reputation in the course of this election,” said Webb spokesperson Kristian Denny Todd. “Of course he is going negative. He’s a bully. And now, with Virginians learning who the real George Allen is and with Jim Webb quickly catching him in the polls, he is wounded and desperate. George Allen can’t run on his record in the Senate. The only thing he can and will do is attack Jim Webb's real record of leadership.”

It is only a matter of time before the real George Allen outdoes himself with nasty campaign strategies. Virginians want real leadership, not Karl Rove’s dirty tricks. Unfortunately, Allen will spend the rest of the campaign clinging to them. In every race Allen has been in he has used negative attacks again and again in order to win the race, sometimes with a staged apology after the damage has been done. Let the record speak for itself:

2005: Columnist Said Allen Has Taste for Nasty Combat. A Richmond Times-Dispatch columnist said “nasty combat” is “the stuff that delights Allen and at which, frankly, he excels.”

2000: Allen Sent Surrogate Speaker to Personally Attack Opponent. George Allen sent out a Republican delegate as a surrogate speaker to personally attack his Senate opponent by publicly alluding to the incumbent’s past relations with Miss Virginia.

1997: Allen Used Nasty Tactics to Try and Win Republican Control. Allen launched “an unprecedented and truly nasty drive for Republican control of the General Assembly. It poisoned the traditional bipartisan comity in the State Capitol, but resulted in a net change of just two seats in the balance of power.”

1994: Allen Used Violent Campaign Language During Rally. Allen used violent and inappropriate insults against people in the Democratic Party to excite an audience of supporters at the 1994 Republican convention in Virginia. Allen said he wanted Republicans not just to beat the other side, but to “figuratively smash their soft teeth down their whining throats.” On a separate occasion Allen promised “to kick the liberals’ soft teeth down their throats.”

1993: Allen Was Unapologetic Towards Flier That Implied His Opponent Was a Nazi Sympathizer Who Stood With Adolf Hitler. Allen flaunted a flier that showed his opponent standing next to Adolf Hitler in a Nazi salute. Allen claimed the flier was unsanctioned, but was completely unapologetic saying, “You have to have a thick skin and a sense of humor and common sense in politics, and the people will see through ludicrous comments.”

1991: Allen Lied About Opponent’s Social Security Position. George Allen had the National Republican Congressional Committee, write and pay for a “disputed letter charging that Allen’s opponent would cut off Social Security payments to the elderly. The letter, which targeted retired voters, said that recipients could ‘kiss their Social Security goodbye’ if Allen’s opponent were elected, citing her support for cutting the Social Security payroll tax. This was a distortion of her position.”

1991: Allen Aired Ultra-Negative Ad That Superimposed Opponent With “Victory to Iraq Banner.” In one of the most negative television ads in Virginia’s history, Allen aired an ad that “questioned the wisdom - if not the patriotism – of the Democratic candidate, who opposed the war. In the spot, a photo of was superimposed over an antiwar demonstration that prominently displayed a ‘Victory to Iraq’ banner.” Allen apologized for the ad after the campaign saying he regretted, but the damage was already done. ; Advertising Age, 11/18/91]

I am amazed Republicans have the guts to even mention the stock market's performance during Junior's tenure. S&P 500 growth in all the past six years combined does not equal one average year under Clinton.

"Born fighting" was his campaign motto...it's a real, straight forward warning to
people who mess with him (see his press releases). You poke him, he knocks you
down;)

Check this out, sweet!

Webb Campaign Blasts Allen Campaign for “Weak-Kneed Attacks” Against
Men and Women in Uniform
http://www.webbforsenate.com/press/release.php?id=57
Arlington—The campaign of U.S. Senate candidate Jim Webb today called the attacks on Webb’s patriotism by Allen’s campaign, “weak-kneed attacks by cowards” and demanded that Allen and his campaign apologize.

“George Felix Allen Jr. and his bush-league lapdog, Dick Wadhams, have not earned the right to challenge Jim Webb’s position on free speech and flag burning. Jim Webb served and fought for our flag and what it stands for, while George Felix Allen Jr. chose to cut and run. When he and his disrespectful campaign puppets attack Jim Webb they are attacking every man and woman who served. Their comments are nothing more than weak-kneed attacks by cowards. George Felix Allen Jr. needs to apologize to Jim Webb and to all men and women who have served our nation,” Webb spokesman Steve Jarding said.

I was precinct captain on electoin day this year. i was sweating it out for Webb.

Personally, I believe the exit poll for VA which had him 5% up. No way it was as close
as the returns had it. Allen turned down a free recount...telling.

Webb will be there as long as he wants. He was at a real $$$ disadvantage in the campaign.

We love him here and the mood in VA is rapidly shirfing to populist, with some restraint (Virginians
don't like to appear too worked up, Webb was pissed by VA standards;)

107. He's for real...no bullshit here. Just motivated by loyalty to his constituents.

ALL OF THEM...he's progressive on race, will discuss the issue; he opposed the
flag burning amentment in the middle of a tight campaign becasue it was not right;
he smacked Allen back, his press releases (see up thread) did, every time Allen
made a dirty remark - much harder than he was hit; AND he's not beholden to anyone.
Big money avoided him...too smart;)

58. Finally!!! A Democratic Senator with some BALLS!!!
I'm so freaking sick of hearing how if I just spent a few more years in school I could be rich. Or how because some little girl in florida and her mom got rich I shouldn't complain about not having health care.

The work I have been doing is important. It deserves a fair standard of living.

Web seems to get that.

Great themes, well structured and articulated, delivered with confidence and poise.

It's not often one hears a speaker with the ability to communicate so clearly/effectively/succintly his ideas. Outstanding up-and-comers we have in the Dem party.

Elections aren't nearly as fun if you haven't worn out some shoes going door-to-door, written a check, pitched in at a phone bank, or sat all day outside the precinct!

My girl lost in a really tight race (one of the few Pennsylvania Dems who didn't ride the anti-Santorum wave into Washington) but at least I can say I did my bit, and hey -- Little Ricky is on K Street where he belongs, and not in the Senate anymore.

Thanks for putting Webb in the Senate - I cheered along with you when the news was announced!

108. I couldn't see or hear him,
but from what I'm reading here I'm thrilled. I hope they really get serious about the disappearing middle class. A blue collar wage earner with a non-working spouse and a couple of kids is going to be fighting poverty. It takes two blue collar jobs to provide a middle class life now. 40 years or so ago that could be done with one.

I've often wondered why a bigger stink hasn't been made of this.

Three cheers for Jim Webb. I hope he becomes a champion. We need one.

169. He turned the SOTU into the STFU
Bush with his lies and empty promises, his 55 minute infomercial. Webb kicked down the door. I liked this part best:

"we serve and have served...because we love our country...we trusted the judgment of our national leaders. We hoped that they would be right, that they would measure with accuracy the value of our lives against the enormity of the national interest that might call upon us to go into harm's way.

We owned them our loyalty...But they owed us sound judgment, clear thinking, concern for our welfare, a guarantee that the threat to our country was equal to the price we might be called upon to pay..."

I thought the CEO to worker ratio of pay was pure gold, I wonder if the mass corporate media will report much if any on that fact, I kind of doubt it.

Thanks for the thread autorank

Kicked and recommended

200. Uncle Joe, finally someone who gets it; its about equity, social justice.
He's unapologetic in his advocacy. People didn't bother to get him. This is how he campaigned and
the MSM called him a conservative Southern politician: right on globalism-he says it stinks; right on civil rights-he thinks the issues is important and discusses it with grace and intelligence; right on civil liberties - openly opposed the flag burning amendment and favors a woman's right to choose; right on Iraq from the start, unlike some of his brethren.

A time to rejoice...let the word go forth from Washington, the new Virginia has arrived...

182. Webb "tears up the playbook" ....Newsweek asks: "Could this help land Webb on the 2008 ticket?"
