Poll question: Where do you get your learned goodness from?
Overall, was there one person in your life that coddled the goodness affecting who you are today?

I mean is it a good thing to tell a friend she looks good in that dress when she doesn't?

Moral dilemmas are a bitch.

6. Kindness is hardwired into our systems for a number of reasons
It's nice to be nice.

When we cooperate with others, they cooperate with us.

Deep down, human beings who are healthy despise conflict with other human beings because it is not in their best interest.

17. Your poll seems to suggest that spiritual can ONLY be related to religion?????
Edited on Sat Nov-03-07 09:15 PM by defendandprotect
religious/spiritual parent/guardian (2 votes, 29%) Vote
nonreligious/nonspiritual parent/guardian (2 votes, 29%) Vote
religious individual other than parent/guardian (0 votes, 0%) Vote
nonreligious individual other than parent/guardian (1 votes, 14%) Vote
mostly from religious/spiritual people (2 votes, 29%) Vote
mostly from nonreligious/nonspiritual people

----------------------------------------------

RATHER there is a universe of spiritual connectedness that has nothing to do with religion ---
you should understand that --

Organized patriarchal religions could be considered anti-spiritual in their long list of enemies . . . beginning with females.

For "goodness" sake -- rethink this ---

46. This is open for misunderstanding . . ..
Edited on Sat Nov-03-07 10:55 PM by defendandprotect
religious/spiritual parent/guardian
nonreligious/nonspiritual parent/guardian
religious individual other than parent/guardian
nonreligious individual other than parent/guardian
mostly from religious/spiritual people
mostly from nonreligious/nonspiritual people
-----------------

so you're supposedly saying . . .
religious OR spiritual parent OR guardian
nonreligious OR nonspiritual parent OR guardian
religious individual other than parent OR guardian
nonreligious individual other than parent OR guardian
mostly from religious OR spiritual people
mostly from nonreligous OR nonspiritual people

and what I'm saying is you need to separate out spiritual rather than connecting it in any way with religion ---

but I think your question is very interesting . . . .
and reflecting back I think I've had a lot of people in my life who were taught religions and religious beliefs but also understood them to be mythical -- so there's a lot in this realm that I think still has to be worked thru.

There are people I remember because of their spirits ---
they are important to me and have had the most effect on me ---
even people I've never known, but where I've been inspired thru biographies, etal ---

Eleanor Roosevelt, I guess is one of those people -- she would have been the first --
except for my family.

Being loved within a family is a spiritual experience -- IMO.

56. Good observation - now observe yourself
Of course a person can be spiritual without being religious, or religious without being spiritual. A person can also be spiritual and religious, and an organized religion can be very spiritual and even pro-female.

36. I'm not convinced that I'm really all that good.
Edited on Sat Nov-03-07 09:47 PM by Marr
I don't hurt people intentionally, but I haven't devoted my life to actively helping others, either. I don't count my (relatively small) donations to charity to be all that virtuous.

I was raised without religion and would describe myself as an atheist. I expect my morality is a combination of what I was born with and what my parents instilled in me.

37. As an athiest
what got you your desire to help others..etc?

Was there someone, or some community/society that got you that way?

Were they nonreligious/nonspiritual on the whole, or religious/spiritual?

Good is relative (so I hear). Relative to how you feel, how would you vote?

38. Hmm... well, in the broader sort of "social justice" sense, I suppose
I picked it up from the writings of people who are concerned with such things, as well as from my dad's union activism. He was a devoted union man and went out of his way to explain to me why people with less have to stick together.

Though I'm not religious myself, I've had a number of friends who were devout members of various faiths (Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, and Sikhs) and I've always enjoyed talking with them about their religions. They all seem to share a similar principle at their core that I like, which is basically just "help people who need it and don't be a dick".

That recognition of the greater good and duty to community is as close as I come to spirituality, so I'll call it that. :P

51. Honestly I think it is hardwired to a great extent
I remember, as a very very young child, hearing things that were mean spirited, unfair, bigoted, etc. and knowing that it was "wrong". There may have been influences further back than my memory goes, but I have always had the basic values I do now.

I have gained strength and peace at times from the examples of others, but the "knowing' was always there...
