and the high prices in Europe MUST be balanced by the fact that THEY have great public transportation, a financial safety net for the under and un-employed & elderly, unions with benefits & decent wages, low cost/no cost college, and a national health care system

The average price of unleaded gasoline in the UK is just over 1 pound per liter.

1 pound is equivalent to $2.07

1 US gallon is 3.7854118 liters

So 1 pound per liter equates to $7.84 per gallon.

This includes the fuel duty and national sales tax. There is no local sales tax in the UK.

Since then, the dollar has fallen considerably, and crude oil has risen in price, and there's been a tax hike on petrol in the UK too. I think Wired would have been accurate back then.
